Right then, the story of how I got it fro free.
Last year I did the Scally Rally Road2Rimini which, for those who don't know is basically buy a car for £100 or less, tart it up and drive from Calais to Rimini across the Alps in 4 days. Well, as I said, last year I did it in this...

Great craic and would recommend it to anyone. Anyway, I was planning the event for this year and one of my mates had this wee golf which was just sitting in his garden (and had been for about a year). It used to be his daily driver but he was handed down an old 5 series from the father in law so the golf got left behind. It was at this point that I popped up and offered him £100 quid for the his Golf to which he agreed. He also said he would get it checked out at this local garage, get a pre mot check done etc. Nice bloke. The garage came back with bad news saying there was at least £800 quids worth of work to be done to get it through an mot.
My mate basically said if I still wanted it I could take it as he wouldn't be spending money on it to sell it. The next day I rocked up a his house with the car trailer and that, as they say, was that.
To fix it and get it mot'd cost in the region of £150-£200. All that was needed was ball joints, brake pipes front to back, a CV boot and a new back box. Needless to say I never did the rally this year. I couldn't bring myself to ruin this car. I will instead be hopefully restoring it's former glory whilst adding a few personal touches.
