ABS Sensor gone i think
« on: 23 September 2010, 09:03 »
Hi All,
I recently had the ABS sensor light come on for my 99 1.8 Golf IV GTI. I bought a VAG-COM cable from ebay and hooked up my laptop with VCDS light to find out the cause.

It reports:-

Address 03: ABS Brakes       Labels: 1J0-907-37x-ABS.LBL
   Controller: 1J0 907 379 H
   Component: ABS/EDS 20 IE CAN  0001
   Coding: 13504
   Shop #: WSC 00028
2 Faults Found:
00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Right (G44)
            35-10 - - - Intermittent
00287 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
            16-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

Seems pretty obvious its the rear right sensor that's gone. (Correct me if im wrong  :undecided:)

Anyway, i've had a look at Eurocarparts here:-

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1999/p/Car-Parts/Brakes/Brake-Hydraulics/ABS-Sensors/?417440151&1&d99f5b6b9e477b0296fdeac6f0a8bc4e859c6089&WSPS

and this looks like the part i need. It does seem to suggest that i need 2 though

"Part Info 2 sensors required"

I didn't think i needed 2, only one, is that right?

Can anyone confirm for me that this is the bit need and that i only need one?

Thanks

Double check the wiring hasn't chafed through first as that's normally the likely culprit

Would i just take the wheel off to check (its at the back of the brake disk isn't it) or would i need to get under it?

Wheel off to check; give it a good visual inspection

Hmm, its not the priciest bit of kit, sooo, for the sake of an extra tenner i dont mind in this case. Each to their own though...

Thanks for your help.  Is there any particular area that's prone to chaffing? Just out of interest too if you know, what causes it to chaff / any workarounds?

I have just changed one on a TT and got the sensor from Euro car parts. Had to destroy the old sensor geting it out mind you as the rust from the upright had eaten into the plastic sensor. Once out cleaned up the hole put a little greas on it at it went in no problem :D.
TRANSFORM, & ROLL OUT!
