smoke when starting up ?

1.8 convertable 118 k miles  on the clock

some times on starting  in the morning there is a puff of smoke out the exhaust
not every time  also there is a " slight knock " that goes immediatly

I think it is

1) valve guides worn  allowing oil to pass  and butn off

2)  possible big end bearing that stops when oil gets  into  it


any one got any ideas ?

2)  possible big end bearing that stops when oil gets  into  it - again yes or a tappet maybe.

how big a job is it to take the head off and replace the valve sten guides ?

do I need a speacial tool  to remove / replace  the sten guides ?

ive got a 1.8 GL thats a bit "smokey" when its cold, its fine once it has warmed up though...maybe its just cold?

Yes really, however it can be done without removing the head.

It can be done with leaving the head on and using compressed air.

do you take out a spark plug  and pump air in then work on the valve but just taking off the rocker cover ?

Kind of... You screw an adaptor that keeps a high air pressure in the cylinder (with the help of an air compressor), meaning it holds the valve tight against the cylinder head. This allows you to compress the valve spring and get the 2 half moons out, allowing you to remove the valve springs to access the valve stem oil seals. It's a camshaft cover and camshaft off job, and obviously the tappets off too.
