Buying Mk6 GTI DSG next week!
« on: 22 September 2010, 20:33 »
Hi everyone,

after lots of deliberation between a late Mk5 R32 and a Mk6 GTI I have finally found a MK6 GTI 2010/10 plate 5Door DSG and put a deposit down today.

The car is United Grey and has the following options:

Rear Camera
Cruise
ACC
18" Monzas
RCD510 inc MP3/Aux 8 Speakers
Vienna Leather
Winter Pack

I am very happy as its a good spec and virtually new condition.

I wont be getting her until next week but already i'm planning some mods.

1. First i'd like to change the headlamp bulbs to the high brightness types. I read a while back that they are an easy change and give a marked improvement.

2. I'd like to swap the RCD510 for an RNS510. I know it can be done but will i still have the ipod connection?

3. Can i retrofit dynaudio or should i not bother and go aftermarket? I'd like to keep standard appearance but do like my audio quality. I dont want to spend fortunes (maybe a few hundred £), just want solid bass and clarity, not huge amounts of power.

4. Finally Bluetooth. The RCD510 fitted is i believe Bluetooth enabled but i have been told this is for Iphones to transmit music? Not quite sure what that means but i do have an iphone4. What i really want though is conventional Bluetooth to my phone so i can drive and make calls hands free.

Perhaps some of you can point me in the right direction for some of these questions?

You're obviously not from the British Isles as United Grey is not one of our named colour options.
There are numerous relevant threads on this forum which would enlighten you and answer most of your questions.
A good hunt should be fun, quite educational and enlightening.
Enjoy your new possession.

Thanks for the swift reply.

I am from the UK and the car is UK supplied through a VW Main Dealer.  I thought the colour was called Steel Grey but when i got a friend at a VW dealer to check the cars spec he showed my a print out saying 'United Gray Metallic'. Note the US spelling of grey! Is this just a quirk in VWs computer system and actually my car is Steel Grey?

Answers to your Questions:

(1) Don't know anything about this! Sorry. I am going to retro-fit Bi-Xenons. Wish I had factory ordered them. Will order them through SteveP soon and have them fitted by mortygt140 (Darren).

(2) Possible. I've got it. Fitted the RNS as a retro-fit with the help of Darren (mortygt140).

(3) Don't bother, if you have not already factory ordered it. It's a bit disappointing IMO. The standard system is good enough. Besides, so I am told, it is a PITA to retro-fit the Dynaudio. Spend your money on a Pioneer sub-woofer. SteveP, who already had Dynaudio, had to retro-fit a Pioneer sub-woofer to improve the dynamics of the system. Personally, the standard speakers sound 'faster' and more exciting! There is a recent thread wrt the sub-woofer retro-fit and another one in the past on the pros and cons wrt Dynaudio.

(4) Again, for this, contact mortygt140 or SteveP. Both very knowledgable forum members. I had my VW Premium Bluetooth retro-fitted by Darren. Brilliant job.

Enjoy your buying spree. It is vey addictive. Believe me.

1 I don't know if they give a vast improvement but I know a few folk have done it. Yes the bulb is very easy to change.

2 the ipod connection will still be there as its in the armrest. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151791.0

3 I don't think folk have retro fitted the dynaudio but some have fitted bass units instead http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=163647.0

4 Yes the RCD510 is Bluetooth enabled but its a bit like TV's being HD enabled, you need a source. You need something like the Fiscon or Mobridge or the VW offering

I put a very basic video on youtube regarding the Fiscon ffor someone to see how it integrates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyCPk7T7sp8

I fitted some Philips bright bulbs to my Mk5 GTI
They are dead easy to fit upside down.  I know I did.
Currently digging a bunker.

Picked up my 6 month old Steel Grey 2010 GTI 5Dr DSG Today and had a 250 mile drive to get her home.

Despite the appalling conditions the car drove a treat, first impressions are i'm VERY impressed.

Love the DSG box, the seamless changes and instant response and I also was pleasantly surprised by the ACC. I would never have ticked the ACC box if i was ordering from new but the flexibility it offers is very useful. I used it mainly in comfort mode for my mostly 250 mile journey and i can say the ride quality was superb. I switched to normal off the motorways but because of the wet i left the Sport mode for another day! I also like the RCD510 but i still think it will be removed in favour of an RNS510. Any idea what i should ask for my RCD510 on ebay?

I have read a few post about questionable quality which worried me a bit but i can say on first impressions my car's fit and paint finish seems very good. Obviously i'll look closer over the coming weeks.

Thanks for the tips and advice on this great forum, i'll be writing more about my new car and making some minor mods over the coming weeks with more of your help!
