yeah, i have the same sound when turning at low speed and using alot of lock. On my old 8valve the power sterring noise was really noticable but on my 16valve the power steering noise isnt there so i thought the sandpaper sound was it but it does sound like something rubbing within the steering wheel. I dont think its to much of a problem.

if you find out anymore let me know.

Fluid level? On my Audi the level hasn't got to drop too much for it to start making a 'groaning' noise.

Yup I had it it, it was the plastic casing next to the ignition key rubbing against the steering wheel dont know what had got in there but it soon went away, like RichandHazel say if it was the fluid it would make more of a loud yawning sound, try some grease or oil around the steering wheel mount.
Rubbish and dust fall in there all the time it goes away.

Yeah I sprayed a touch of WD40, worked a treat but I will check the steering fluid.

My fluid levels were responsible for the yawning noise on my 96 8v
