GTI tops megane and giulletta

I have had 2 alfas as courtesy cars fairly recently, a GT, and a 156. First the 156.... possibly if not theeeeeeeee worst car i have ever driven. I wouldnt give one to my dog to pi$$ on. Just when i thought they could not get any worse, i get the GT..... absolute pile of crap!

I used to love alfas, esp the styling! I would never buy one, borrow one, or recommend one. Worst excuse for a car ever, the design and functionality of buttons is a perfect example of this. LIstening to some of the comments on there... what a joke. Written by alfa owners that wouldnt know quality if they drove into it.

Before my golf i owned a 156 2.0 Selespeed, and although the gearbox had a mind of it's own, i loved the car. The interior was sooo stylish with the panelled leather on the doorcards, and even though it was a good few years old (51-plate) the leather looked and felt like it had never been sat in

The engine was a corker, it felt really strong and torquey (obv not in the same league as the GTI) and the steering had loads of feel, and even after the 104,000 miles it had covered, nothing had broken (apart from the passenger electric window switch) and it looked brilliant.

I test drove a Brera S last year before buying the golf, and i felt as though they've gone downhill now they're using the GM engines. It didn't have the character of the older ones. Looked stunning of course and handled brilliantly due to the Q2 diff, but the engine was boring and lifeless.

The golf is so much more solid and is a miles better car, but i think that Guilietta is stunning, especially from the back!

Err, and that explains why you're on a Golf forum?
You cyclists are a weird bunch, now make your mind up do you now officially cycle on pavements at high speed or are you still supposed to cycle on the roads? Or can you just do as you please like Pikeys?
I go out walking and get cyclists in homo-erotic clothes buzzing by me on the path at high speed, and yet I jump in the car and I get cyclists in homo-erotic clothes cycling two abreast at high speed on narrow roads in the road. And now I see homo-erotic cyclists who apparently don't like Golfs making half arsed statements on Golf forums. Man, and I thought society had other problems.....
I'm not anti cyclist by the way, spent my best years on two wheels, it's just the lycra type, I think many have 'issues'.

if its built like any alfa i have driven (any they do actualy drive quite nice) then you will be giving it back in 3 months and cycling to the VW show room.

I think Wayne is very frustrated as he cannot even wear those homo-erotic lycra condoms due to a misshapen physical and mental format. Poor sod.

Some interesting views but we all have different views and it makes the world a less boring place to be, I do not hate Golfs I spent over 5 years working on them and think the mk1 and mk2 are and will always be classics, I owned a mk3 but to me this is the car at which point VW lost direction with what makes a GTI, yes the later cars are ok but I am not keen on them.

To me a mk6 looks too much like a mk5 to be a step forward, if I was in a postion to spend say £25k I would have a shortlist and maybe I am guilty of thinking outside the box but I like the way the Alfa looks however i would look at other options including a Scirocco.

I am 100% not a lycra clad cycling nutter by the way but because of the cycling I do not use the car much hence why I have never spent much on one but carefull buying and selling has now got me a 02 plate car for under £2k which I am happy with.

Wayne, my views on certain types of cyclist may be narrow minded but are they any more stupid than some of your negative posts in the mk6 forum? I just made a sweeping statement similar to yours. I do read other parts of this forum but don't post stuff up in other areas because my recent experience isn't of those models so I have little to offer (been driving VWs for over 23 years BTW and a member on here for a good few years), and you seem a helpful guy in other parts of the forum. It's just when you arrive in the mk6 area you and one or two others seem to have a bit of attitude towards these cars. It's not just what you say, more of the vibe you give off.
Okay, so you think mk6s are 'bland to look at' but can you tell me which Golf era wasn't bland aside from the mk1 (the only one that wasn't designed by a comittee)?
In my view the mk6 is no beauty but it does at least have a fairly balanced design in general. The Alfa however looks like a bar of fancy soap from most angles and the front looks as though the stylist got so frustrated with his design he tried cutting it in half with an axe.

And as for a life outside of the forum, why looky here: you've got over 15,000 on golfgtiforum alone.

And a warm welcome back to Nosher. I'm sure I'm not alone in having missed your thinly veneered words of wisdom. 
I'm sure your Alfasud was great fun to drive old chap, but was it so much fun on the days you had to push it to work? Or when your car cleaning sessions involved merely sweeping up the rust piles that fell off it over night? Still, mk1 Golfs were pretty awful rust buckets back in the day and their steering wasn't much cop either.
VWs may not have soul but plenty are driven by R-souls.

i used to have a 147 and it looked lovely, and the inside was tops - great consumption (was a diesel  ) - however it did go wrong and also in the wet it was like driving a sledge - zero grip, aqua planing all the time and tons of oversteer!  kept you on your toes though!  i quite like the guilietta, however its no GTI!

I love both brands as does my father and they both have their pro's and con's. He's just gone from a Bora 130 TDI Sport to a GT Blackline. The Bora may have been better built but the alfa is stunning to look at and goes like a scalded cat. The Bors is about to turn 200K and my mum is now running it and I reckon with some TLC it'll do another 200K. I doubt the Alfa will be in as a shape when my Dad's done with it but he doesn't care, everytime he gets in it he grins from ear to ear.

I had a Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 JTD out as a courtesy car for a week once.
Driving position was terrible, handling was all over the place., hated it.

If that was passion and sole they can keep it.
I was so pleased to get back to my Golf  back.
