Engine Mods
« on: 15 August 2003, 13:09 »
I was looking to do a couple of mods to the performance of my engine and thought about an induction kit and racing chip.

I have a 1987 K-Jetronic Golf GTI 1800 mrk 2.

I spoke to a bloke at K&N and he told me that K&N do not make an induction kit for the k-jetronic ???, if this is the case whos does?

Has anyone fitted a chip and would you say it was worth the money? If yes, what chip and how much does it costs?

Cheers

I didn't think you could get an induction kit for k-jet cars because the fuel metering unit fits on top of the air box. You can't chip it because theres nothing to chip!! it is mechanical fuel injection. The best thing to do is get a K&N panel filter and drill holes in the front of the air box, only do it in the front so you only draw in cold air. I have done this with a couple of cars in the past and it has proved very effective. Put a decent sports exhaust on it as well!

The induction kit replaces the bottom half of the airbox it looks mad. Its a metal cage with a foam filter inside.

when drilling the airbox what size holes do i drill?

with the induction kit - where would the crank case breather go? my breather pipe is constantly leaking - i have replaced all parts on it and cleaned the filter on the underside of the cover and still the oil just p*sses out all the air filter and box? I dont really want to fit an induciton when it is leaking.

When I holed the one on my car I used a 16mm spade bit in a electric drill, take the bottom section of the airbox out of the car, it takes some wangling to clear everything, and you see it has moulding lines for strength on the outside of the box. the spade bit fits in the gap a treat and just drill a sequence of holes in the plastic. It will end up looking a bit like a connect four game.

Only drill the wing side of the box otherwise you'll suck hot air in from the engine. Also you can remove the blanking plate on the inner wing so that you suck the air from the inner wing area.
