Unusual starting problem, im stuck!
« on: 16 September 2010, 15:22 »

Hi all, Im having problems getting my 88 GTi 8V started, purchased as a non runner (had to save it)
It has a decent spark at the plugs, fuel seems ok, timing ok, turns over, tries to fire up but will not
start, (it has started once, eventually spluttered in to life, idled at 2ooorpm for 4 mins , blipped the throttle
and it slooooooowly died) and has not started since.

done so far.......

New plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap, ignition switch,
Guessing its nothing fatal as it has started once, and ran ok.

My question is...

Could it be something as simple as a "Sensor", idle valve, temp sensor, fuel pressure etc????

Sorry for the essay, im ok on K Jet, as my MK1 runs it but new to Digifant  :embarassed:

Any help much appreciated !

Cheers

Dib

Does it stink of fuel after trying to start?
Are you sure you have the right plugs in the right holes (Sorry had to ask you would be suprised)
Take one of the plugs out and see if its too rich i.e very oily or clean.
Worst case ECU or something simple just need to start narrowing down the issues.

Your lucky day some things you can go and test with! Some of it was for a Rallye but still digipants system without the supercharger!

1. Engine running warmed up, unplug the blue coolant temp switch, does anything change? No = bad coolant temp.
Alt: 1000 ohms resistance after normal operating temps
2. Air Temp (on intercooler tube) 500 ohms on outer two pins, you have to drill out the cap to get the adjustment.
3. O2 sensor, of course, check the wires/harness for any damage. If you haven't replaced this lately, might be time to get the universal and just crimp the wires on.
4. The TB -> ecu hose must be plugged in the right place. its closed to the passenger side. Unplug the ecu hose from the ECU , if the car still runs like crap, then its the ecu hose. Don't even attempt to drive the car with the ecu hose off.
5. Check your battery voltage, If the battery voltage goes low, the ECU dumps 25% more fuel than normal.
6. The ground wires, to the head, and everywhere else. Bad grounds are a common issue with this car, especially the one to the head.
7. Distributor cap/rotor, remove, inspect and clean dirt. Sandpaper any "growth/corrosion" on the metal contact points.
8. Wires, plugs, you should remove the plugs and inspect for damage, or fouling from being rich.
9. If o2 sensor goes bad, it will kill the cat real quick. Remove the cat by lowering exhaust, look inside, if its crumbly, turned sideways, or black, its probably dead.
10. Check vacuum through boost gauge (10-15psi of vacuum) or MFA (84-104) at idle. Anything else, you might have a big vacuum leak.
11. ISV - if you haven't rerouted it, you may have a leaking ISV.
12. Idle screw on throttle body. Make sure its not gone, or about to fall out. Usually results in "hunting" or high rpm idle.
13. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Its by the passenger rear wheel. Easy to change, watch out for gas spraying you in the face!

cheers for the reply!, going to have another look at it today
Plugs are all in ok, checked timing, and it did run for about 5 mins so
I know its ok, and yup it wreaked of petrol, guess its overfuelling or
a bad mix etc.... anyone know if replacing temp sendor will make any
difference???????

Ok some real bad overfuelling causing the idle to just die and even harder to start!
The only situation I was in when the throttle body butterfly flaps got stuck open and letting in too much fuel. It might be worth taking off the throttle body and check the flaps to see if gunk has them stuck open and bit of injector cleaner should help free anything up!
Disconect the ISV and see if it helps the idle or clamp down on the vac pipe from the ISV before starting it?
So its a 8V digi? Could be ECU related but leave that to last!

You didnt mention how long it was a non runner, if its been sitting a while it could be old petrol? It is quite unlikely going by your description of how it ran when it started, but always check the cheap and easy stuff first!!
I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?
