The 8v does not have loads more torque lower down than the 16v, this is a popular myth. The truth is the 8 and 16v are pretty much the same up to 4000, then the 16v keeps going while the 8v runs out of steam.

The myth about 8v having loads more torque low down than the 16v , this is what 8v owners like to tell themselves to make them feel better when they have  been beaten by yet another 16v. The ONLY way the 8v will have more torque lower down is to put a larger block in.
Last year when i was looking for a 16v or vr6, a garage told me to buy an 8v cos it is actually quicker lower down, what a load of bullsh!t!! , and i told him so!!

I drove an 8v and a 16v before lumping for the 8v (Insurance mainly) and the 8v was definately quicker off the mark but feels a bit twitchy on the throttle compared to the 16v  The 16v doesnt take long at all to cruise past but has to be thrashed to get the most out of it.  When I first drove the 16v I actually had to ask if it was a GTI until the owner told me to plant it, made me smile like a fool when it hit 4k....  Still might get meself a 16 valver as I do motorways every day....

I assume you are talking about mk2s. I've drove 8v scirrocco, 8v mk2 golf and 16v mk2 golf. I think the 8v engine isn't up to much in the mk2 but was very good in the mk1 golf and scirrocco. The 16v is only good if you boot it, but that is all part of the fun. The 8v in the mk3 was completely hopeless, i won't even bother saying anything about the mk4..

The best engine in the k-jet series was the ke-motronic fitted to the passat and corrado. This 2.0 16v engine was fitted to the mk2 golf in america, unfortunately it was weighed down with all the emissions equipment. The 2.0 engine had much more torque lower down than the 1.8, so allround it was a better drive.
