8v or 16v?
« on: 15 August 2003, 09:23 »
Hi All

I've been looking for a nice retro car which I could sometimes take on trackdays and have finally decided to go for a Golf GTi and spend about 750

I can't find a nice MK1 for that money, but there are a lot of 2's for that including a couple of 16vs

What's everyones opinions?  8v or 16v .  I kear that the 8 is better low down, but everyone I speak to really rates the 16.

Also, anything in particular I should look for on the 16 opposed to the 8?

Is there a huge difference in insurance.  Not that it should matter now I'm over 30  :(

Thanks

Oh no not this question again  :P

The insurance is a couple of groups different but not enough to make a buying decision on.

**dangerous opinion alert**
the 16v will be more fun on the track because you are likely to be keeping the revs a lot higher.

remember the 16v needs leaded petrol unless you are going to pay 400 ish for the vsam ignition thing

Sorry  ;D  I went threought the forum afterwards and found a few more threads like this.  Novice schoolboy error Ha ha!!.

I've heard about the 4 star prob before and needing some special kit.  Can you still run them on Super U/L with an additive with no bad effects?

Hello mate your better off getting an 8v for ?750 a 16v for that money wont be very good. I use shell optimax in my 16v pain in the arse car. I would rather have a 8v than a 16v you have to rev the tits off them to get them going fast. 8)

The 16v doesn't need leaded petrol, it needs high octane fuel (98 RON). The best to use is optimax, the 8v (k-jet not digifant) also needs the high octane stuff. You can use LRP but i've been told the engines don't like it.  There is no comparison between the 8 and 16v, the 16v wipes the floor with the 8v every time.

Its an age old debate about what engine is better, the 16V performs better than the 8V on all counts and thats gospel. The reason why people like the 8V is because it doesnt have to revved to get the performance out of it, so it "feels" like its better to drive. Also a smaller engined car is more likely to be driven nearer its limits so you feel like your going faster and having more fun.

I have a 16V and when going slow it feels the same as any other golf because your not taking advantage of the increased breathing capabilities but when you bury the throttle joining a motorway on the slip road it flies, its what a 16V is about, getting on cam and smiling as you launch past everything else.

GOLF VR6 is correct when he says all golfs should run on high octane fuel to get the best out of them. The ignition can be retarded on the 8V to use low octane unleaded but the 16V cant be retarded. Both cars will respond well to K-star.

As JV rightly said the 16V will be an excellent track day tool, it will be used at the rev ranges it loves and you will enjoy the experience more. I would have a decent road car for everyday driving and get a cheap 16V purely for track days, a cheap car to mess around on, to tinker with and hone. Also its probably better as explaining to the wife why the car is written off make take some doing.

The 8v has bags more torque lower down and so sprinting off the lights is good as the sprint to about 50 when the 16 valver will appear and then beat you by nearly a second to 60.  When you are actualy accelerating to 60 the 8valver seems like the more rewarding car to drive and copes with hills better but that 16 valver screams around in 3rd nicely and will cost more in the long run to to the higher revs needed to shift around.
