replacing lambda sensor.....
« on: 15 September 2010, 19:09 »
hi all,
just a quick question, i need to replace my lambda sensor on my mk3 golf abf (16v) as the 4 wires the go to it ave all broke,
my question is, could i just buy a 4 wire universal one for it (ie this one....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-4-wire-Oxygen-lambda-sensor-Volkswagen-Golf-Mk3-/250488599620?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a5248b444) and wire it up to my existing plug (engine end) or would this one be better for it?.....

thanks in advance, any help will as always be greatly appreciated,
cheers, brad :D

Its always easier to use the one with the plug already attached so id go with that one.
unless the wires you say are broke are on the engine side of the plug in that case could use either.
not alot of space to be workin around joinin wires unless you have a ramp to go from underneath.

universal ones you get a little joiny thing, what you do is chop the plug off the old lambda and conenct it up with the joiny thing to your new proble. only buy bosch or ngk, cheapo ones are false economy. if your old lambda plug is damaged, go to the scrappy and cut one out. just make sure its the right plug, they changed in 96.

or just buy one with the right plug on, but it'll cost ya more money!

Would this explain my ridiculous fuel consumption then ...

Where abouts is the lambda/oxygen sensor located, I need to inspect mine ...

disconnect the plug to the lambda then drive the car for a bit. if problem solved yeah its likely the lambda. the plug for it is secured to a bracket on top of the rear engine mount arm

Sorry mate, can you explain this, I dont get how that works? why would the car run normal disconnected? doesnt that make the lambda sensor irrelevant if the car runs fine without one? :S
