when you take the cap of the header tank can you see the water circulating in there?

if youve fitted a new thermostat and the water is circulating, it points to the water pump, what model mk4 golf is it you have?? the 1800cc 20v engines are prone to water pump failure as the plastic impellor breaks down with age, sounds like this could be your problem, there about ?35 on an exchange basis at vw, but unless your any good at DIY i wouldnt attempt it...........

its a late 99 model v reg. the water is doin somthing in the header tank not sure wat it is suposed to do but it boils up in there. all i no is the engine is over heatin and its not gettin into rad much the rad stays stone cold but you can feal the rad inlet pipe gettin a little warm.it just dont go round so thats what made me think its the pump....so to swap the whole pump its only ?35 or is that just for the broken part on the pump. sorry if i sound dumb lol but im not used th vw engine yet only had it 5 months.

Agree with above, sounds like the pump.. the plastic blades just break with age. Usual practice is to change them at the same time as cambelt, since you have easy access then.
