Help please, got a leak

 First post on here so first I'll say hello to all

 I've got a problem with my 1999 VW Golf TDi, I bought it in December 2003.

 Got it home and after a week I noticed the carpet behind the drivers seat was absolutely soaked, so I phoned the guy and he said bring it down in a few days and he'd phone me when he was ready to look at it. Took over 2 months
 Cut a long story short he had the car for over a week, leaving me with no car in the process, then he rang and said they'd fixed it. Problem was a seal on back door window. I only checked the carpet for a month afterwards and it was always dry so I thought problem solved. Plus it was never really left in the rain until the last 4 months as I've moved house and no longer have a garage.

 Last week when cleaning the car I noticed the carpet is absolutely soaked again Surely the seal can't have gone again? There's no signs of damage at all and it looks perfect.

 Any idea's where water can be coming from to get behind the drivers seat? There's absolutely no signs where it can be coming from, it's got me completely stumped. Can seals go so quickly? It was fitted correctly when he fitted the new one as I soaked the car for an hour with a hosepipe, he said he did the same when trying to find the fault and again when he fixed it.

 Warranty is up and I really don't want to take it to VW and pay ?35 an hour for them to find what's up!

I had the same problem with mine, with the exception that the water was behind the passenger seat, turned out the water was seaping from underneath the door and running over the sill and then running behind the seat.

Anyhow.................its daft but  it only does this when the car is parked on an incline with the nose facing up hill, when its raining of course  and theres nothing obvious wrong with the door seal.  Is your parked on an incline?

I noticed the same thing when it first did it. I got the water hoovered out by a valeter when it first did it and parked the car on the incline with the nose down, no water. Next time with nose up the water appeared again. After I got the seal replaced it didn't matter as no water got in.

 Now I've moved house there's no incline, my driveway is completely flat. It's only just started leaking again as I've only just noticed there's loads of condensation on the inside of the windows due to the leak.

 Very strange and annoying problem, makes the car smell damp aswell

Try looking at the drain holes under the rubber gasket in the bottom of the door, its unlikely but they may be blocked, also check out the seal you replaced and see if theres any indication of damage. Finally give the car a good soaking with a hose and hopefully that'll show you where it's coming in.

I work for VW and i know that it is a common fault that water leaks on MK 4s, behind the door panel there is another panel which is bolted and sealed to the door frame, the edge of them goes and water gets inside, all the interior floor carpet has to come out and let the water out through rubber gromits in the floor, once those panels are replaced they shouldn't leak again, on the Bora's they have the same problem but on the front doors.

Cheers for that, sounds like it could be the problem becuase I honestly can't think what else it could be.

So it's a well known fault by VW? If I took it in they'd know what to do? Or is it a pretty easy DIY jobby?

It's a pretty straight forward job, but VW have made a modified pipe because this problem is common, only takes 10mins. Hope this helps mate.

Sorry mate replied to the wrong question, but it is a common fault and phone your local dealer to check prices cos can't remeber how much the panels are off the top of my head, but i've seen people try to use sealer around the edge, DON'T BOTHER because it doesn't keep the water out and makes a mess. so i'd phone up and see how much they are. hope this helps
