newbie intro, turbo and remap
« on: 12 September 2010, 13:04 »
Hello all, new to the forum, I have just bought a standard mk5 gti, colour coded bumpers in silver and tinted back windows, very nice. A couple of questions as im not the most mechanically minded, ive got about 1000 to spend, what can i do for that, can i replace a ko3 turbo straight on with a ko4, and will it make a difference, who does the best for remap in north lancashire, cheers all.

Hey and welcome to forum.

Its not as simple as just bolting on a new K04 turbo. You need to replace other internals like the manifold, injectors and a quite a bit more. Awesome GTI do it an upgrade pack but it cost £1875 + VAT (thats supply only, if you want them to fit it its £2350 + VAT and thats assuming you already have a remap, if not add another £500).

There are many different places to get a remap from. There are the obviuse choices of the big names like Revo and Bluefin (use the search function on the forum to read up more on these). Also take the power figure that they say they will give you with a massive pinch of salt. From a standard GTI with just a remap, Id be happy with 240bhp (Revo say they will give you 255bhp but dont be lead astray with these figures).

I had my remap done by R-Tech not far off 2 years ago now and its been good as gold and they were quite a bit cheaper than the "bigger" names.

Easiest and best way to upgrade is to either PX for an Editon 30 or have an engine swap for an S3/Cupra/Ed30 one. A member over on another forum managed to do the full engine swap for around £2k and then had his K03 engine to sell if he wanted to.
