protecting bare metal
« on: 10 September 2010, 18:30 »
im gonna be doin my alloys in the next few days, and gonna try and sand the lip to metal and polish it, but im sure itll oxidise, is there any products i can get to seal it, hopefully low maintenance cos i dont wanna have to be waxing them every week, was thinking jus laquer but that'll prob make it end up looking dull?

saying that, i hope i can polish them well otherwise there gonna be painted red

you can polish them and they will be fine if you look in the detailing section there are many threads explaining how to keep alloys looking mint..

from memory they say they should have 3 coats of wax on them once a month which will help speed cleaning every week up if you go on www.waxamomo.co.uk or monza car care they have the stuff you will need and i believe they offer forum discount

I refurbed my very shabby wheels this winter, and all I've had to do to the lips over the wet summer is give them a good going over with autosol every few weeks - they've not needed much more than that and a regular wash!  You can apply all kinds of sealants, I've used Poorboy's Wheel Sealant, but I've found that a well polished lip will let go of brake dust and dirt pretty easily even without a sealant.  This is how they came out after all sorts of wet+dry, wire wool, autosol and elbow grease:

and this was what they were like before

Y'know, I've got no idea - they came with the car when I got it and no-one's been able to really identify what they are.  They've got a 'fomb' logo on the back, but Google turns up very little about them as a manufacturer!
