Is the a bird under my bonnet??
« on: 10 September 2010, 14:15 »
Hey guys and girls. Well my 06 MK5 has just developed its first really annoying trait. When I start the car up from cold, it sounds like there is a bird tweeting under the bonnet! It stops if I take the car for a run, and isn't there if I start it up and the drive.

By the sounds of that, I think it might be the alternator  :undecided: but I wouldnt know where to start with that.

Any advice would be great!

Sorry mate but it's the cam belt tensioner & pulleys made need replacing , same thing happened to my ed30. It would only make the noise on cold start!! It's known issue , you still got warranty ? I had problems with VW kept mis diagnosing the issue good luck.

Hey Steve, cheers for replying... Ive got a warranty with Warranty Direct (but that wont cover the belts), and I only bought the car 3 months ago, if its the belts I'll just take it back to the dealer and get them to sort it out.

Is there anyway I can check before I go?

Cheers

The only way really is to leave the car with VW and let them do a cold start!! But when they do try and make sure you are there with them otherwise tell you load crap???

To be fair as it's an 06 plate it's probably overdue if it's not been done already.

Mine did this as well, about 2 weeks after I bought it.  There was a host of other more basic stuff wrong with it as well i ended up getting a refund.

I did spend some time trying to convince the garage it was the cambelt though.  Stick with it mate they'll eventually replace it if that is indeed the problem.

Have a listen at what mine sounded like and see if it's similar

Despite all i may have said in that link i'm still looking for another Ed30 :P

Has it had the cambelt and water pump changed yet?

Cambelt needs doing 4 years or 60k miles so yours either needs doing soon (in which case get the tensioners done then) or it should have just had it done (in which case why weren't the tensioners done then? Any garage worth its salt should have suggested replacing them whilst the cambelts getting done).

Cheers guys.

iwilkins - It doesnt sound any where near as bad yours, but it seems to be getting there.

AlanD - I'll have to have a look through the log book. Its an ex company car, so I would assume it was relatively well taken care of in that department.

I'll have to book it into a garage and have it checked out, looks like any money on modding this car is going to be spent on getting it to run!!
