Ive never had more than 35 mpg out of mine.... average is probably in the region of 32.5 mpg.

I've got cruise control on mine and never used it tbo (I find it impossible to use with a GTI as I feel a constant need to put my foot down).

Personally if I was you I would test drive both a GTD and GTI before making a decision if your concerned about mpg? I previously owned a 170 GT DSG which was a great car but I find the GTI a bit more special in all departments (apart from mpg of course).

Hi everyone (my first post)

I ordered a new GTI in June which i've just been told this week is ready to ship. I like you, am driving a GT 170 at the moment and love the balance of economy and a bit of performance to boot. I decided to go for the GTI on the basis that I only do a limited amount of mileage per day which is normally quite short hops. On my GT i'm seeing an average of about 33MPG even with my heavy foot. I'm guessing it wont be a lot different for me in the GTI, but hopefully I can let you know in a few weeks when it arrives.

I decided to go for Candy White, I dont think it would look odd having two cars the same colour on the drive. I've also opted for Cruise Control, RCD510, 18" Monzas, Winter and Luxury Pack. I agonised for a few weeks about leather, as I wasn't really sure if I liked the cloth until my dealer actually found me a car with it in to test drive. I'm not quite sure why I forked out for the cruise control in the end, I wish i'd read this forum sooner and found out that you can get it installed afterwards for less than factory fit. I'm sure that i'll use it every day now, just to make sure it will pay for itself.

There was an interesting thread running on another forum about the merits of cruise control which I was in agreement with, in that you can actually get more MPG being light on the gas than what you can using cruise control.
Probably down to the driver being able to see the road ahead etc.
The only time I have used cruise on this car and my previous car was when I was driving through the roads with the average speed cameras.

You can, for sure.
Cruise has cost me 1-2 MPG on my last 4 cars...
I still use it though.
Average speed areas especially as you do, and on long boring runs.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Lucky man :)  It sounds like you've gone for a great choice of options. I really do think the Candy White looks stunning, so I will have to consider that carefully.

you didn't say in your post if your current GT is a TSI/TDI, but I'm guessing from your MPG its the TSI like me   From what I've been reading the GTI if driven 'normally' as I would on my run to work will provide similar or even better MPG to our MK5 GT TSI's.  Will be interesting to hear your feedback when you get yours, and deffo some pics too :)

BTW I'm loving this forum, only problem is I am getting way to distracted by it at work...that and all the lush pics GTI's on here!!

I'm in the same boat with regards to the leather.  I've never paid for it in the past but my current GT Sport was leather standard, so not sure if I will regret losing it.  Just can't justify that extra cost tho, and would prefer ACC/Xenons in its place if given the choice.  What di you make to the cloth interior on your test drive?

Yes my car is the TSI, I did get to drive the TDI version once after buying the TSI and I thought the engine was awful in comparison. My dealer is keeping me up to date on the progress of the car and says that he hopes it will be in the UK next week. I'm glad because everyday I drive to work, I keep thinking how much better it might be.

I know what you mean about the leather, one of the things that swung the cloth (apart from the £1800) was that you can still get heated seats if you take the winter pack.  The cloth looks a lot nicer in the flesh, than in the brochure. I really wasn't taken by it at all before driving the car. I've already had second thougts about not getting the Xenons but i'm glad not to have taken leather - i'm not sure if it represents good value for money. Also the brochure states that some parts aren't real leather, my dealer still hasn't answered that question!

I'd say that if you are looking forward to ordering then don't forget the VAT rise in Jan, but i'm not sure how this will affect you?

Make sure to post then when you get your GTI, as really want to hear what you think to the difference to your TSI!

I popped into my local dealer yesterday lunch, and he did mention I'd be looking at a 6 month order.  So just waiting to hear back from my company on how much my chosen extras will be!  Not going to go for all of them, but just in that order based on how much I can afford.

RCD510
Dynaudio
ACC
Xenons
Rear Camera
Luxury Pack

Hope to get it ordered in the next week or so.

Yeh sorry...Monza Shadows/Metallic and Bluetoot prep are all within budget, so its only any extras that I have to contribute towards :)  Although I wrote the winter pack off due to the amount of other options!!

+1, it is so nice on a cold morning just to pop the heated seats on and within minutes you've got a lovely toasty rear end, mind you it is very good at it's job as you only need it for about 5-10 minutes or your arse is cooking
