V Ed30 vs VI R - advice pls!!
« on: 28 August 2010, 17:40 »
Hi All

I've had my MkV Ed30 from new - about 2.5 years now, I'm beginning to wonder if it's time for a change. I do really love it but you can have too much of a good thing, you know?

I was wondering, and apologies if I'm repeating previous queries, about getting a MkVI. I probably won't go for a MkVI GTi (even though it looks  ), 210PS cf 230 etc etc, I'm thinking of plumping for an R instead.

Any thoughts on whether it'd be 'worth' it please? Will I really notice much of a difference?

Also - how much smaller is the R boot compared to a 2wd MkV or MkVI.

Cheers

Martin

The R is faster than the Ed30 and the GTi. No contest. It has a smaller boot than a 'rocco.

I did not go for the R, not because it had a smaller boot or because it seemed overpriced, but because I did not require the extra performance and also could not accept the pretty dismal fuel economy from daily driving in London.

Try before you buy.

If you can justyfi R money then I would take it evrey time over the ED30 , its much better to Drive than the Mk5 smoother and more refined, or get the GTI go for a re-map. The ed30 is very nice car i used to have one

Tiguan quicker than the Golf

I like the 4WD of the R, but that's about it. I think the GTI looks a lot nicer/classier.

I too would suggest a drive...
The R will be quicker off the line and easier to drive fast out of junctions/off roundabouts...but ultimately, with far higher driveline losses and more weight, isn't any faster once you get through 2nd and away from heavy foot induced wheelspin.

You will be able to use more throttle more often with the R...but I wouldn't expect it to be noticably faster than your Ed 30 and certainly not hugely more fun, if at all.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

I thought the R was a brilliant drive but I somehow disliked its snout. However, it is gradually growing on me.
What I really dislike are the side-skirts which are the same as those on a Golf Bluemotion!

ETTO!  I think its pathetic that they've botched the sideskirts on the GTI by putting naff black plastic in their place.
Almost as criminal as making the bottom 1/3rd of the MK5 GTI's bumper black.

I've gone from an ED30 to an R, and the R feels significantly quicker.  Much easier away at junctions in the wet too.  As above - try before you buy.  The boot in the R has less volume than the Scirocco, but is a much more practical space.  The boot is about 3" less deep due to the 4wd.  I can still fit my golf clubs and huge trolley in the boot - but I do have to take the shelf out.  I had to take the shelf out in my ED30 too though.

The side skirts on the GTi have a semblance of design flair unlike the long colour coded lump on the R and the Bluemotion.
Each to their own.
