Mk2 1.3 Kr conversion!
« on: 27 August 2010, 23:01 »
As you can probaly see, I am a new user to this site,
I usualy use E38, but I feel like the technical help is not always very useful,
so I'm going to try here,

I have a 1.3 mk2 '91,
I am doing a KR conversion,
this will be a post followed up with many more questions i would have thought,
but the one going through my mind atm,
is im doing this conversion (wiring wise) very minimalistic,
because i dont really understand injection, or wiring for that matter,
my question is, could i use my current loom for stuff like, starter motor, gearbox reverse light, dizzie earths, those sort of things,
and then thread another loom for the things the carb engine doesnt have?

and allso, is the lifter pump in my tank game for the job of running the 16v (with another fuel pump involved-which will be on a manual switch)

and last but not least, make me feel welcome?

You will need to change the wiring loom also the tank and lines as you will need a return line.

I'm hopeless with wiring, you did ask about your gearbox though. Is it a 4 speed?

I thought most people stuck ABF's in rather than any KR's, do you just have one available to you for a good price?

There are plenty of tech wizards on here so no doubt you will get all if not most of the advice you need.

Have a look through some of the project cars http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=62.0 for some info and use the search function aswell for further insight.

you dont have to change the engine loom, you can get away with just the spark controller and loom to get it running. however it'll be a pain to start cold and it wont run nicely till its warm, because you wont have any of the cold start or isv wiring there. this is why you change the engine loom over for a proper kr one. the lighting loom you can leave alone though.  you will need to change the battery, starter and alternator wires, but thats only because everything is in a different position on a kr rather than it working any differently.

for the pumps its easier to just change the whole rear loom, plug n play then. the tailgate wires disconnect at the C pillar so thats no big deal.
you could chop the pump wiring out of another mk2 and run it along side your old loom, but it;lkl take the same effort to do it as carpets all still need to come up either way. polus you'll then need to splice the wires to the fusebox or add a separate pump relay. so as you can see, easier to just change the loom and just plug it in at both ends!
