Thoughts on Winter/Change of - Wheels
« on: 25 August 2010, 09:04 »
Was thinking about getting a set on Rep Golf R Wheels 19" and getting them painted gloss black for the winter plus I have always wanted to try the black wheels on a white car look. What do people think?

EDIT

:afro: to the gloss black bit.  Get some proper winter tyres on them as per Ess_Three's comments below

19s for winter?
You planning on running proper winter rubber?

I'd have thought smaller, narrower and stronger for winter use, with potholes appearing and the chance of sliding against a kerb and bending the suspension, that as strong a wheel as possible, with a taller sidewall for more protection and a narrower wheel width would have been a better option than unknown strength, wide, 19" replicas.

My local dealer in Glasgow are doing the black replica R's for £99 but I agree with ess_three that you would be better off with thinner / smaller wheels rather than the 19"s that will make your car an even better sledge in the snow

The absolute maximum for winter use would be an 18" wheel, at either 7.5" or 8" wide, with a proper winter tyre on...they will be good, but not as good as dropping to a 17" wheel, with a narrower, taller sidewall, proper winter tyre.
Or if you are really serious, the 16" winter sizes suggested by VW.

16" fit over the brakes just fine...but if you are planning bigger brakes in the future you'll probably need to stick to 17 or 18" wheels to clear them...
The smaller the wheel, the more protection for the suspension and the narrower the tyre you'll find available.
Stick to 18" and you'll have to stick to a 225/40/18 pukka winter tyre.

Due to potential brake clearance issues in the future, I've gone with BBS CH in 18" with Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on..all ready for November when I'll put them on for 4-5 months.

Gossa was running some 18" rep's of those wheels a while back when he was getting a couple of monza's refurbed......... http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=156167.0

From memory I think Gossa brought them from here.....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/18-ALLOY-WHEELS-VW-GOLF-R-MK5-R-MK6-TT-A3-NEW-SCIROCCO-/250686062789?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET

IMO these looked really, really nice on Gossa's car and I was very tempted to get a set of these myself, however I'm always a bit nervous about running reps on my car. As you know I opted for genuine rocco wheels on mine for winters and paid £600 sheets for them including tyres.

I'd like to see what these R wheels would look like on your GTI especially as you've got a CW one

the F1s were terrible it was like driving about on steel rims without tyres,
