Bloody cars :P
« on: 16 January 2005, 12:19 »
Hey folks, I have just changed the radiator fan sensor on my Golf mk2 16v and put the liquid back in, as to the instructions in the Haynes manual, let it get up to temp and the fan didnt come on, I tested both pipes from the radiator and the top was hot and the bottom was cold, is that right? So me thinking that it could be the Thermostat.

I took it out for a sprint down the local dual carriage way and it stayed at mid way and even went down at one point (I was impressed ), but when i got of the dual carriageway the temp went up to just under the 3/4 mark and kinda stayed there, got home and let it run for a bit, the fan came on(woo hoo I did something right) but the temp only went down to just over half way.

I have no idea what the running temp is on these, I rechecked the pipes and both were hot, so maybe the Stat did open??

Any answers would be good, maybe its running right I dont know, hopefully you VW mad people could shed some light on this.

Oh and talking of lights  When i went out for the quick jaunt the battery light was flashing (it went of after a while)?? (ahh another problem) erm the alternator did get a bit wet when i was flushing out the Rad with the hose.

Hehe nothing to bad I hope :)

Thanx

By the way are these cars suppose to cost loads to keep running? ?

it sounds like its running about right, take the filler cap off the expansion tank and let it run til the fan switches itself on. this way any air left in the system will work its way out. but it all sounds about right. mine tends to sit around halfway on the gauge and it should go down a bit when your going fast as you've got tons of cold air hitting your radiator!
if your mfa is working you can also check your oil temp to see what else is going on under yor bonnet.

My oil temp onm y 16v mk3 is 90c when running, so i would say 108 is a little to hot !

All the VW's i have owned seem to run at about the same temp , half way up the temp gauge . As for the oil , it all depends on how hard you are running it , but it does douns like a bit more oil is needed .

Its going to be hard work in this weather to get the car hot enough to need the fan .

Ok I think I need to change the Stat, which i have already, now seen as im taking the pump apart, is there a pump that is better than the standard 16v version that I could look for ?.
