alloy wheel advice/tips
« on: 21 August 2010, 17:01 »
Recently fitted black 18" vw alloys with sliver rim. The rim is slightly corroded, any one got any tips to help get the shine back into them?

i've given them a good clean and they are lookin better than they were but still need tht last little bit to make them perfect

polish them with a medium compound if there bad or some finishing polish if there not too bad then seal them and wax them twice which will ensure they'll stay in good condish, keep it up aswell, people tend to only do this once then forget about it and wonder why there rims go back to the state they were in before. top up the sealant and wax once a month if possible or as frequently as you can. wheels obviously see alot of crap being so close to the road and they also have to deal with corrosive break dust so keeping ontop is key.

hope this helps.

Try and steer clear of acid based cleaners too. Citrus based will be kinder to the wheels.

citrus based wheel cleaners can also cause issues due to the citric acids which will have the same effect.

This is true. But less harsh on the wheels.

i use Autosmart active xl in a range of dilutions depending on how bad the wheels are, i also use Autosmart g101.
most commersial wheel cleaners will be safe on alloy wheels but they are very weak so the user has no chance of damaging there wheels, its fail safe for the manufacturer really so they dont have people putting claims in for damage caused by the product.
trade cleaners like ive listed above are concentrated and need to be used with caution and not used by an inexperienced individual.
