You know i wonder how people cope without forums like this. For months whilst waiting for my ride i checked the threads regularly. Collectively there is a massive amount of knowledge on here and i'd like to think GTI owners all look out for each other. Just reading this makes me realise the pitfalls of buying these cars, even from a main dealer! cos i work in IT i have a very rudimentary understanding of chips and firmware and other basic electronics jargon. But if say my Dad decided to buy this car, and then something went wrong with the engine and it needed a warranty repair/replacement, if the dealer blamed him for remapping it cos the chip had been electronically tampered with, my Dad's gonna be screwed. My Dad doesn't know about this remap stuff (at least i don't think he does...)

if this really did happen, presumably this could be taken further with VW Customer Services directly, or even Trading Standards?

Personally i wouldn't consider applying a remap, at least not until after the warranty is up, after which point it doesn't matter does it?

It happened alright!

To be fair to the dealer, well the sales side at least, they said they didn't know where it came from and after consultation with their MD they gave me my money back. I suspect the buyer however got a right reeming as he did know and didn't tell them.

They pushed the car back to their supplier as not fit for a vw dealership and made them take the hit. That's who the seller is I assume.

They'll just whizz the car up for auction and it'll fetch decent money due to the short supply of newish Golfs. It'll probably appear up for sale in one of the bigger 'sports and prestige' type indie dealers I reckon.
