« on: 17 August 2010, 22:50 »
How do you rate them... Good - Bad - Cr4p...

Looking at doing the MK4 Caliper conversion and they are offering this Set...

Anyone bought one? What were the calipers like??

Cheers in advance!!

Not used them but running the mk4 calipers on mine with the braided conversion hoses.

Easy to fit and work a lot better.

Any issues with the handbrake cable?

Some patten calipers I have been looking at on ebay say you have to use a Pre 88 Handbrake cable?

Can't comment on the company.

But TSR offer the conversion hoses for £35 and you could get brand new callipers for around £50 each.

You DO NOT change the handbrake cables! On pre-88 cars you have to flip the calliper upside down, left to right - that is all.

BUT I wouldn't bother unless you are having bother with your existing callipers - it isn't an upgrade in braking performance/safety.

If you insist on changing them, I would just get 2x Mk3 callipers brand new for the same price without faffing with hoses.

Cheers Ben,

New MK4 calipers are over a ton each & Vat from the stealers and £70.00 plus vat each from GSF....

Volkbitz do the hoses for £31.00 inc post or best offer and I looked at the feed back and they took £28.00 on a best offer...

It is an upgarde if they work better and dont seize... also they are much lighter than the cast Mk3's, Which I have also looked at... MK3 Caliper cost from GSF is only a few quid cheaper than MK4's...

They still seize (check out the MK4 section), they just seize less. They also aren't much lighter than the MK3s - we're talking grams here. Also, given the hybrid of metals on the MK4s, they are more prone to corrosion where the two types meet.

But if you are not having bother with yours - it really isn't worth changing them.

But again, if you insist - I got my MK4 callipers from a scrappy at £15 per side, but ECP quoted £50 per side for MK3 units (with discount), but didn't have them in stock.

It's time to change them soon... They are not relly bad, but you can see by the discs that they are not working 100%...

Considering how much dosh I have thrown at this car's interior & wheels - I am not about to skimp on the brakes...

I just want the best items in performance for the best value that keeps to OEM spec as much as possable and was lead to believe that the MK4 option was the best...

Arn't there 2 versions of MK3 Rear calipers... GSF have some at £50 & Another at £70 each...

Not 100% sure on GSF's stock.

I understand what you mean, but don't get caught up in the common mis-conception that the MK3s or MK4s are any better in terms of performance.

The handbrake and foot brake performance is identical to that of the MK2 callipers. They just have the advantage of having an internal spring.

As staited above they go straight on a 90 spec car using the existing hand brake cables.

Pic of mine fitted. I dont scrimp either as you can tell from the pic lol.
