Parked my car as usual in a open public car park for work but when I got back to her I immediately spotted this 15in curved crack on my windscreen

At first, I was fuming and I suspected it must have been some tw-at who had thrown a stone at the windscreen, but when I got home the above type of windscreen damage just doesn't add up cos, usually, the type of windscreen damage vandals cause would often be a 'bulls eye' or 'star break' type of impact damage.

I'm really baffled by this and I'm trying to understand why this windscreen damage has appeared. Could it be a manufacturing defect? There was certainly no stone chip before this crack appeared when I was driving. If there was, then it must have been a very minor chip without me noticing it.

Thought I'd open this up for opinions, or any similar experiences because I'm getting paranoid about whether to park there again.  :undecided:

Getting the windscreen replaced this Saturday so I can't get an professional opinion on the cause until then.

Im guessing you have not hit any pot holes hard? As bonded in glass acts as a strengthener in modern cars.

I had an identical crack in my mk5 screen except it was at the bottom! was driving along a recently re-surfaced road, you know the ones with stone chippings? one tiny stone got flicked up by an oncoming car and hit the screen at the bottom (beneath the wiper), this resulted in a "tiny" chip, the next day while parked up waiting for the missus to get out of work i could hear a faint scratching sound, i thought nothing of it and drove home. went out to the car the next morning and there it was! That scratching sound must have been the screen slowly cracking with movement and temperature, weird! hope this helps?

Oh and when you get it replaced keep an eye on the bloke doing it cos the screen in my mk5 was very closely bonded, which ended up shattering in the corners and they gouged the body at the top too which needed repairing (at they're expense).

Was a warm day yesterday... could this have caused it to crack?

I've seem some cracks in my time  but that's a nasty one. Probably a stone chip that caused it imo. I had similar crack on my Mk5 and it never happended since.
