Fuel Pumps
« on: 17 August 2010, 19:23 »
Hi all
im wanting to change the hi-pressure fuel pump on my car to an APR one as iv read many reviews on them and they seem to be by far the best, but the one question no one mentions is that if i was to fit it and iv no re-map on my car as its higher pressure coming out the fuel pump would this effect the running?? it should but im not sure... its just im adding these modifications as im going along with cash flow but dont wanna fit it if its going to make the car run like a bag of spanners and once its all fitted map it to whats on... is this right ???? sorry if im coming across really dumb now im just mechanically minded not very good with the technical side...

The apr pump will be of no benefit on a stock car.
If you go for it, keep it till you remap the car before installing it.
Without traction power is nothing!

It will not damage the car, the worst it will do is make your car run a little richer and therefore actually safer
The fuel pump only works to deliver fuel pressure requested by the ecu, so on an OEM set-up should behave like a normal pump anyway.

Not necessarily.

Tuners make different maps for GTI's with fuel pumps and those without. Generally stage 2+ is the map that goes with a fuel pump, intake, exhaust and (sometimes) uprated intercooler. Some people suffer fuel cuts or power hesitation at higher rpm's when accellerating and an uprated fuel pump can help eliminate this. Also a car will make more power with a high pressure fuel pump fitted in conjunction with the right map.

Yes, there will be a generic map for the mods you mentioned. Some will still do customised codes and others will give you a base code with safe settings that you can alter yourself (only recommended if you know what is a safe setting and what isn't and you have VCDS). It is very much down to personal preference.
