You are incorrect Weston, even if you put it in manual mode the DSG gearbox will still kickdown unless you have the DSG remapped to stop it.
Hurdy you 100% on that one mate ?? Mine doesn't kick down in manual mode and i've not modded it in any way since purchase. I'm hitting the kickdown switch as well. Oddly though it does seem to think about it then just dismiss is as a silly mistake by the driver 
Cars in the stealers atm and i've only done it a handful of times on the M1 tbh but i seem to recall the readout on the highline flashing to 4th then straight back to 6th. It didin't actually change gear though !
Maybe the cars been mapped ?? or the DSG at least ?
It'll def kickdown in whatever mode its in if you nail it, unless of course you're cruising along in 6th gear at 6k rpm lol
On mine i press it all the way down and there is a very noticable extra bit to press to get the kickdown, so i can press all the way and avoid the kickdown switch - maybe something has moved a little or something on mine
