if you put your foot right to the floor, you engage kickdown mode, where it drops a gear and revs high.  check the manual, its a "feature".

yeah I think so, prob VAG just being careful so you dont blow up the gearbox.

Just put it into manual then it won't drop down for overtaking like that. You could leave it in D or S then once your up to speed in 6th knock the gearstick across or just drive in manual anyway as that's the best way 

You are incorrect Weston, even if you put it in manual mode the DSG gearbox will still kickdown unless you have the DSG remapped to stop it.

Kickdown was one of the most annoying traits of the DSG. The reason it tends to take time to kickdown is that it is liable to be dropping two gears, in which case the gear the DSG is asking for is on the same gearset as the one it is coming from   ... i.e. 5th to 3rd, 6th to 4th, or more commonly at lower speeds 4th to 2nd.
   A single gear drop is usually a quicker change as the box already has the alternative gearset ready to swap to.

REVO and GIAC do DSG remaps which give changes that are up to 60% faster and isolate manual to be a manual ...i.e. no change up at the redline and no kickdown. When in manual the DSG remap still allows the gears to drop to the next one down when the minimum threshold for the revs is reached.

I'm confused, when I'm in manual mode I find I can put my foot down and it doesn't kickdown, unless I push the pedal a little further and engage the kickdown switch.

That is correct, but most people press the go faster pedal all the way down when overtaking and the box kicks down

I'll explain a little more....

The gearbox has two driveshafts and one driveshaft contains 1st, 3rd and 5th gear the other driveshaft holds 2nd, 4th and 6th.
If you are in say 4th gear, the DSG automatically pre-selects either 3rd gear or 5th gear on the other gearset depending on how you are driving at the time (fuzzy logic FTW!). If the DSG thinks you need 5th gear, then this is pre-selected, so when you mash your foot to the floor the DSG not only has to deselect 5th gear, but also has to decide whether you need 3rd or 2nd. If you need 2nd then it has to disengage the clutch on the gearset you are running in (4th) and swap down to 2nd gear, which is on the same clutch and gearset and then re-engage drive........so it takes longer simples
In reality this should only take around 0.6 of a second, but just feels longer.

Hmm maybe mine has the dsg remap? Is there another way of telling? I haven't had it done myself.

Does it kick-down in auto or sport? Are you pressing hard enough to engage it?

Foot to the floor and it dropped down in manual, don't normally drive like that, a little throttle is enough most if the time

Hurdy you 100% on that one mate ?? Mine doesn't kick down in manual mode and i've not modded it in any way since purchase.  I'm hitting the kickdown switch as well.  Oddly though it does seem to think about it then just dismiss is as a silly mistake by the driver  

Cars in the stealers atm and i've only done it a handful of times on the M1 tbh but i seem to recall the readout on the highline flashing to 4th then straight back to 6th.  It didin't actually change gear though !

Maybe the cars been mapped ?? or the DSG at least ?
