electronics numpty - vagcom - am i just gonna confuse myself

hey
got a 16v '96 with slight running issues, actually runs ok, mostly but revs slow to drop bellow about 1800, takes a couple of seconds for the last bit down to tick over at about 900. is it worth me getting vag off fleabay to try and suss it out, or will i just confuse the hell out of myself, basically i can bolt things on and off, change oil and have a reasonable mechanical understanding, but a bit of a numpty with computers and electronics.

Try cleaning the throttle body first Mate....do a search on here for how to do it. Will cost you nothing and may well sort this out for you.

did have a look in the end and the butterfly looks kind of snotty on the leading edge,
will give it a go.

I've always understood it that the ABF is designed to do this (as do a lot of other cars) My one certainly does and it is to prevent low Oil pressure when coming down the rev range quickly. IE Coming off a Motorway.

aaaah if thats the case then good cos I was thinking my throttle cable was probably sticky, rev it and the revs take awhile to drop down fully

If you clean the throttle body properly (which should be part of your routine maintenance anyway) then you will find that the revs will drop as they should rather than pause and then drop.

cheers for the advice, done a few more miles in it now with injection cleaner in and seems a little better, if it is a design feature then i dont like it coz you get no engine breaking when you lift off and is just annoying on quick gear changes.

I am now on my third Mark 3 and mine have never done this except for when the throttle body wanted cleaning. After cleaning then everything went back to how it should be.  Try cleaning out your throttle body and you will be amazed at the difference an hours work makes to your motor Mate.
