Cutting out at 70mph
« on: 12 August 2010, 11:13 »
Hi Guys,

Over the last few days my 8V GTI has decided to cut out a few times. When on the motorway it cuts out then instantly bumps (jolts) itself back on. The rev metre instantly cuts out to 0 then back up to 2000. I'm unsure if the speedo does it too as it all happens in the space of a second.

Im getting some coilovers fitted in the next few days, so is there anything I should ask the garage to look at. Is there any common faults I should check?

Thanks

Yes, I have a Logic 900 something by Conlog, which in another post I've been moaning that my immobiliser wasnt allowing my fuel pump to turn on. That seemed to happen when I was low on fuel, so always keep it over half full now.

Oh and just some midrange coilovers.

EDIT: Sorry for the noobie question but what does 'Try VAGCOM' mean?

vagcom is diagnostic software that you can use with your laptop for testing the car, type it into ebay, i believe the gti 8v is obd2 plug!

Ive done some googling, I see I need to buy a cable, but is the software free/cheap/expensive? Any links? Is the connection near the ashtray?

Thanks!

IS this the Item. Say's it comes with drivers which I'm hoping is the laptop software yes?

Option 1: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-COM-409-1-KKL-USB-CABLE-VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-GOLF-/380181420223?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment#ht_4028wt_1137

Option 2: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-USB-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-409-1-OBD2-II-LEAD-VAG-COM-/330399696070?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment#ht_3794wt_911

What sort of info am I hoping to find from using this?  Will it give me any info to do with the immobiliser, fuel pump problem even though its not factory fitted?

Sorry for the really basic questions.

EDIT: Will the 'lite' software do the trick http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/download/index.html

Yeah, any of those 2 cables will be fine.

Don't know what "lite software" you're talking about, but if you just use the CD that comes with the cable, you'll be fine.

I'd check in your car 1st to see if it has the pin connections as my 8v didn't!!

Pull the ash tray out and slide the little black blanking plate above the cig lighter.

I'll take it out and post a photo of it here later this evening
