Possible danger?
« on: 11 August 2010, 10:55 »
I'm a little bit worried about what I might be doing to my car. My girlfriend has a 1.0 vauxhall corsa in red. It had terrible oxidisation (turning almost pink). I got rid of it all with my g220 but it has started to return very slightly. My process was to wash and clay the car followed by Menzerna Power coat (cutting compound 5/10) and then Menzerna Final coat (cutting compound 1/10). I didn't have any time to apply Auto Glym Deep Shine after this as her sister needed the car (typical). I'm planning on redoing the corsa at some point to get the paintwork back to red.

My current dilema is that my mk6 GTI has some swirls in the paint. I have bought Menzerna (cutting grade 7/10 and recommended for VAG clearcoats).

Is there a risk that I might remove the VAG clearcoat with this product and thus make my paint vulnerable to increased oxidisation? I don't want to make the problem any worse than it is. I'd love to get rid of the swirls but not at the risk of exposing my paintwork. I have Auto Glym Super Resin Polish and Deep Gloss Shine - will these be of any benefit to protecting the paint from oxidisation?

Or would it be better to accept the minor swirl marks and not compromise my paint? (They are only noticeable in the brightest of sunny days)

Thanks for any advice,

regarding your other halfs corsa just go back over it with menz final finish and then seal it to stop the oxydation coming back as fast.

vag clearcote is hard stuff and you would have to seriously abuse it to remove it, a DA hasnt got the muscle for this so dont worry mate, go for a medium cut on your mk6 then final or power finish to gloss it up then apply a glaze if you have it then seal and wax

Right, excellent. That is just what I wanted to hear. Thank you very much Purple Haze.

One final thing... I assume the sealant's purpose is to seal in the wax?

no probs.

nope!! the sealant goes under the wax to protect the paint from uv damage, contaminents etc, get your polishing done then put a layer of sealant on and buff off when cured then apply another layer and buff off, give about an hour then apply your wax x2 layer leaving 30/45 mins between wax application. wax is your final stage of protection.

what Dan (Purple Haze) has said is spot on... nothing to add to that

as for getting a decent sealant... use this http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=78&idcategory=8

Jetseal109 provides fantastic UV protection and lasts for ages both on the car and in the bottle... honestly you can't go wrong with it. You might think it is expensive but it will save you trouble in the long run and means that you won't have to re-do all your hard work

I would also be protecting your lovely mk6 with CG JS109... minimise your swirls and protect against stonechips etc

wax is your final stage of protection.

A bloke over the road from me has a gorgeous BMW Z4 3.0i Coupe, and he uses (after everything and 2 coates of Collinite wax) AG Extra Gloss protection as his final stage of protection. His car is always pristine and beads like i've never seen anything bead before...

In your opinion, would the AG Extra Gloss protection take anything away from the finish of the Collinite?

depending on what collinite wax he has and what colour car, 476 and 845 are the lesser blingy of the collinite range and 915 being a little more glossy looking due to the higher carnauba content.

i wouldnt say AG Extra Gloss protection takes anything away but i wouldnt say it ads anything either, imo he's waisting his own time and product/money which ever way you want to look at it, collinite waxes are hybrid waxes ie they have carnauba in them and give a nice shiney finish but they also have sealant properties which is why they are so durable and generally dont need anything adding to them.
personally i dont and wouldnt touch AG products with a barge pole, if he wants an extra wet glossy finish thats better than egp then dodojuice is the way to go or swissvax, zymol if hes got a bottomless pit of money and no sense.

hope this helps

Yeah i agree, im a relative newbie to the detailing world and have only recently invested in some Clay. Last weekend i clayed my car, then polished with Megs Deep crystal and waxed 2 coates of Megs techwax 2.0 - reason im on this thread is that my mk5 is tornado red too! He even came over and said how good it looked!
After reading all the posts on Jetseal109 im going to invest and do it all again before the winter to get some added protection on there!
