To restrict the amount of air getting in to keep the performance down?
well i cant think of any other logical answer! A pipe would be on the end of that base with a filter box somewhere else with a feed to that!... the normal setup keeps everything short and self contained.. maybe it was to achieve the oppposite of what most people on here wants and silence any intake noise??
Anyway, all the options covered for this thread me thinks!
