Doesn't hang out very far. About level with the sump from memory. Will have a measure and get you some figures.

Looks good mate, how is it attatched? You'll have to keep us updated on the testing, need some very wet weather now for a thorough test!

Cheers

It has two points of attachment. The primary mounting is a bracket on the guard which is bolted to the big steel mounting plate for the P/S pump. It also has a small auxilliary support bracket which hooks over the front mounting pin for the original VW guard. This second mount is deliberately flexible to allow for the movement of the engine relative to the chassis. May yet be able to delete this mount as the main bracket has turned out much stiffer and stronger than I thought it would. One thing I haven't been able to check so far though is what if anything will need to change to mount the assembly on an 8v GTI - it has been built to fit my 16v. Hoping to lay my mits on an 8v for an hour or so soon for a trial fitting.

Ok, latest news. Have double checked height. Lowest point of guard sits about 10mm higher than lowest point of sump so shouldn't be any issues there. Also the prototype guard is continuing to rack up miles under my Golf. Took it out in the wet today and can report zero belt slippage issues which is encouraging. Couple of little issues have arisen though. One is a small rattle/buzzing but I think I've already traced that and it's an easy fix. The other is that, although it stops water getting at the belt, it does collect the odd splash from puddles etc. Therefore a small drainage hole may be required. The trick then will be to stop water going in through the hole as well as out!

Nice effort.

Think getting a tdi under tray would be a easier option.

Possibly but it is a much more expensive option. If there's enough interest to make it worth tooling up, I'm hoping to produce my guard for less than VW charge for the small original item, never mind a TDI tray.

Just checking in! Have dealt with the two little issues that have cropped up so far. Had the guard off last night for a quick inspection and it still looks healthy.
