Rattling noise
« on: 12 January 2005, 19:41 »
Have had a rattling noise, from my 1989, 8 valver, on acceleration for a wee while, had thought it was coming from the exhaust manifold; however, on closer inspection, it is definitely coming from the top of the engine, somewhere under the cam cover. It is only noticeable when my foot is on the accelerator, when I remove my foot the noise stops. Anybody got any thoughts before I remove the cam cover for a look.

No timing chain on an 8v, sounds like tappets are on the way out.  Either that or incorrect grade oil.  Don't want to alarm you but it may be oil pump is failing and leading to oil starvation under load!

First thing I would do is put some ATP engine flush in your oil, run it for a bit then drop the lot and replace with Synta Silver from VW or GSF Car parts, then post back here with your results

could it be your splash gaurd rattling about? i guess it depends what sort of rattle it is and i doubt you'd hear that bit of plastic from inside the car anyway, ho hum it seemed like a good thing to check.

Update. Replaced oil and took cam cover off for a look. Thought something may have been rattling about; however, all appears well and oil seems to be circulating freely. The car is running very well, fuel consumption is pretty poor though. The noise is a metallic rattling sound, that is why I thought it may be exhaust related and am of a mind that it is related to the exhaust manifold or thereabouts. The oil pump theory is interesting and I'll have a look at it when I have more time. I am about to embark on a 350 mile round trip and have an awful feeling that something catastrophic may happen on the journey.

could it be a heat shield vibrating? they often rust at the bolts and move around as the exhaust heats up/cools down.

just make sure your AA membership is up to date!

Hey man I have EXACTLY the same noise, same ideas and thoughts as you however someone said something...
When I was at GSF [uh i know i know] a customer just got chatting to me and he listened to my car, he said the hydrolic tapets are on there way out.
Could that be the noise ?

Also how much do these cost to replace and have fitted [rough guess] ?
