New car delivered with scratches and swirls
« on: 10 August 2010, 14:54 »
New MK6 GTI  collected yesterday after trying to collect 2 weeks ago but refused it at the time due to scratches and swirl marks. However I am really dissapointed as collected yesterday and there are scratches (quite a lot and long straight lines) on some panels and loads of swirls marks all over.
It is metallic black so I know will show everything but dealer says its normal and they often have scratches from the factory. They said VW would say it was acceptable if they inspected it.
They mopped it with a special soft polish at the body shop and the bonnet is a lot better but they haven't removed the fine scratches.
You can't see them standing back but can up close (obviously worse in sunlight).
They offered to order another one but would mean another  x months wait (7 this time) and increase in VAT and affect my trade in and whilst they don't detract from the car I can't believe you could collect a new car at this price in this condition.

Has anyone else had this problem? I have bought new cars in the past but never encountered this with a brand new car.

Unfortunately the finish you get is only as good as the person they employ to do the job at the dealership. It's simply unacceptable and I'm sure there are countless people here who will not only agree but could return the paintwork to the condition it should have been in when you collected it.

It is metallic black so I know will show everything but dealer says its normal and they often have scratches from the factory. They said VW would say it was acceptable if they inspected it.

Ignore him - he's just fobbing you off. It is your money and your opinion which matter. Tell him to get VW to inspect it anyway. Then complain to VW. Then tell them both to pay for an experienced person to re-finish the paintwork - I think they call it 'paint correction'. I've seen 10 year old cars covered in swirls and light scratches returned to near new condition, so a brand new car should be easy.

and Trading Standards

You have 30 days I believe to reject the car which, although you've waited all this time, I would seriously suggest doing unless they can come up with a solution - i.e try and polish out the scratches or even respray the car

Either way they have to sort it; just remain calm, firm and polite.  Don't get into slanging match as the dealer will be less likely to want to help you

I had something similar when I picked mine up. When I spoke to the salesman a few days before and he said I could pick it up the following Wednesday evening. Evening it dark I won't be able to check the paintwork. Thats ok we will put it in the workshop and we will even turn the lights on

I get there on Wednesday evening and it was raining and the car was outside. I spoke to the original sales girl and I said its supposed to be in the workshop so I can check it over. Sorry no one told me that. Well I'm not signing for delivery until I check it. Ok, and she made a note on the paperwork not inspected because it was dark and wet. If you find anything in the daylight let us know.

I inspected it the following day. Everything appeared to be ok apart from a what looked like a 2" scratch/line near the fuel filler. I couldn't feel a groove that a scratch makes. I got a damp cloth and that didn't remove anything so I rang them and told them. I took it back and their guys removed it totally. While I was there I asked if the DRL's could be turned off, they did that at the same time. I was only there 20 minutes, it must depend on what mark remover they must use.

Take it back.

This is not a happy situation. A good detailer should be able to correct this. If not, you have a problem and would probably need to reject the car. But I don't think it will come to that. As is, it is not acceptable.

I will PM you of what I use. This removes all light scratches and swirl marks with very little effort and very effectively. It removes no paint. It can be done, so don't get too depressed. Get the dealership to pay for the products and their application.

Just keep calm, be polite but firm and make them aware that this is not an acceptable situation and you would, if necessary, take further action if the situation is not resolved satisfactorily.

Sending this post whilst on a very bumpy bus!

Now back home!

I also wouldnt go down the new car route as they will happily sell the one you ordered for a tidy profit. Stick to your guns as a correction should only cost them a couple of hundred quid.

BTW: Gizzy's car, which is also metallic black, was covered with swirl marks after the dealer washed it. I wonder if this was resolved.
