Worn out rear shock - Replacement options
« on: 09 August 2010, 09:22 »
Hi guys,

I've noticed (as its damn obvious)  that my rear left shock has had it. Turning right at anything over 30mph the car will bounce up and down, and taking sharp corners on Devon A roads is scary!

I've been told that I'd need to replace both the back shocks, when one breaks?

I was planning to eventually lower the car a little, but seeing as the shocks broken now, it seems like as gooder time as any.

What would the cost of replacing the standard back shocks be, compared to lowering and firming up the car all round. Is it even worth lowering the car, will I get better handling?

What are my options for a decent affordable replacement for the standard ones.

I'm new to the whole modifying cars thingimagiggy.

Thanks!

Originally when I got a new suspension setup I didnt want to lower and was looking for just uprated stuff, but soon learned that it costs the same or can be cheaper to lower. The quality of the kit will have quite a big affect on the ride quality though, which is why in the end I got a wietec 40mm kit. If you want it to be good you need to spend the money on it

Theres a recent thread in here somewhere titled 'mk3 handling' or something, which basically answers this question. I always recommend wietec kits as since fitting one on my mk3 the ride is awesome, very comfortable and minimal body roll. If driving within the limits you probably wont get any :P
Its one of the more expensive kits though (£360 from venom) and replacing the top mounts will also help which can also be a bit pricey as well, I got all round vr6 mounts (which are recommended for any uprated suspension setup) from ecp for about £70
20vt conversion, sig pic coming soon!

You would probably be able to get new rear shocks for around the 20 quid mark but to be honest Mate lowering would be the best option. If you are throwing it around the lanes then try lowering 60/40mm and the handling will be so much better. Will cost more to do but is well worth it as the car looks better and handles miles better to.

I have purchased some mid range coilovers. Are there likely to be any parts that might need replacing when changing the shocks? E.g nuts, bolts. Thanks

When I changed mine I ended up grinding off the nuts/bolts at the bottom of the front struts. Could not shift the old ones for love nor money.
