4th year servicing clarification

Hi everyone,

My 56 plate is coming up to it's anniversary and thus it is service and MOT time. I was hoping that someone could clarify what I need to be paying out for. I realise this is going to put a dint in my savings so have decided to keep the car for longer (I love it anyway so not a problem!) and that I might as well get things done comprehensively rather than skimp about.

So I have time and distance servicing, 29,000 miles and it's DSG. From what I've read here I know it's a comprehensive service and that the cambelt needs changing but then it seems to be opinion based about water pump/DSG oil etc. So is there a definitive list of things that need attention over and above the major service?

 4 years or 60k seems to be when most change cam belt  mine was done then along with the water pump, there not expensive so worth doing at the same time. Mine is a manual gearbox so not shure about DSG service but i'm shure i've read it's due an oil change at 4 years ?.

DSG oil change is 40k miles.  I asked about it when I had my 4th year service and was told it's done by miles.

I saw that thread and whilst it cleared up about the cambelt and DSG oil for me, do I really need to change the water pump at 29,000 miles?

Anything else to be considered that isn't in 2007GTI's thread?

I suspect most people don't need to change the water pump but do so as it's a cheap part and thevlabour cost is much smaller while the cambelt is being done otherwise it'll cost u the same as a cambelt change if it goes at another time. Is it worth not doing it for the sake of £50 (that's the extra cost to me incl vat at a VW dealer - goes in on Monday).

^^^ Exactly. Although, there actually shouldn't be any additional labour charged.

The water pump is in hard to access part of the engine bay. Most people do it at the same time as the cam belt simply as a precaution.

If the pump did fail, it would be a couple of hours labour to fix. The £50 or so to do it at the same time is surely worth it...?

Mine is a 2006 (06) and I had the 4 year service done, cambelt and water pump changed at around 25,000 miles. The water pump is worth doing as everyone else has said due to where is located, so much easier to get it done when doing the cambelt. I believe some of the pumps plastics are not that great which is another reason to get it done.


Most VW dealers will do deals on cambelt, tensioner arm & water pump. £299-£399 seems to be the norm.
