Yep but I would never spend £40k plus on a Golf not when you look at other options.

Focus Rs which before anyone shouts chav I know is in a different league and aimed at a lower point in the market is around £25k new of you could get a s/h M3 or M5.

Ok...or you could buy a 911.

But then there are running costs...you don't get a 3 year warranty, 30+ MPG and 3 years servicing for £250 from an M3.
Do the sums...and it makes sense to many.
If it didn't make sense to many, there wouldn't be a long waiting list.

But decided a tuned GTI was more fun and individual for the same outlay.

The guy wanted a Nothelle converted VR6, he went out and bought a Nothelle Conversion VR6, I don't see the problem here  Sure he could have bought an M3 at the time, but clearly he didn't want one.
