Mk 4 clicking sound from centre of dash
« on: 10 January 2005, 20:11 »
A clicking sound or rattle has just started to come from behind the centre air vents on the dash.? It appears when the engine is idling, but can also start when the wipers are on.? I have turned the air con off but it makes no difference.? The car has done only 37,000 miles.

Any experiences out there of this problem.? What is the easiest way to access behind the dash.? Can it be accessed from the engine bay side.? All help will be appreciated.? Thank you.

? It is not the drinks holder.? I have now discovered that when I have the turn indicator on, the noise disappears.? I wonder if it is anything to do with the relay unit.? Immediately I turn off the turn indicator, the noise comes back.

I went to the local VW garage today and they told me that it must be a piece of plastic that is vibrating.? I explained the effect of the turn indicator and they said that the vibrating plastic would be energised by the relay and stop vibrating.? They told me to take out the 2 blank control buttons and?working from the inside, prise off the hazard warning and the heated rear window buttons, being careful not to disconnect them from the wiring plugs.? Spray a can of WD40 or similar lubricant with the plastic feed extension attached, into the area behind the air vents.?

I will try that this over the weekend.? Hopefully that will cure it although I have my doubts.

Finally sussed it.? Took out the blank switches together with the hazard warning and heated rear window switches and found the clicking noise coming from the hazard warning switch unit, which incorporates the relay for the turn indicators.? Replaced it and everything is fine.? Glad to have got rid of that noise.? It was loud.
