A bad day... now...Getting better!
« on: 03 August 2010, 23:22 »
Ok, some of you might know that my car requires some attention on the mapping front.

On top of that I got a stone chip today about 1/4 inch in diameter. Its taken all the paint off and exposed clean metal underneath. This happened less than 2 weeks after I polished and waxed the car all over with a Megs G22. The car was pristine. So I am annoyed. Going to try to get a Tornado Red touch up pen and fix it.

On top of that I am now found my attention being drawn towards a squeaky tailgate. I started investigating by removing the spare wheel well, boot liner, folding the seats down and finally found that it is the tailgate rubber seal. Going to look at it more tomorrow but has anyone got any advice for removing the squeaking?

So, all in all not my best day of ownership (although none of it is peculiar to a GTI or a VW).

Try some silicone lubricant on the rubber. You can get it in aerosols, it's good to use on all the seals as it helps to preserve them as well

I hada similar thing happen before I'd even got mine home from the dealer after collecting it!
I collected a stone on the complex curve on the wing near the corner of the drivers headlamp, enough to dent the wing - really obvious.

I had the Dent Master bloke work his magic, on the dent - 20 mins later he had the dent out.

A layer of VW Tornado Red paint later and it was looking better - touch-up dropped in a cup of freshly boiled water (to thin it) and allowed to run into the chip along a piece of cleaned thin solder.
I filled the paint layers up with the lacquer using a similar method, once the Red had dried fully (overnight) and once dried, spot wet-sanded it back level using my G220 and used the G220 again to polish the wing up.

If you look close you can see it...but it's 99% better than it was.

VWs Tornado Red touch up is pretty close colour wise, but you will need the clear on top to give it the gloss and lighten the Red slightly.

You should be good to go, as long as the galvanising isn't affected.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Thanks alot for the advice. Got my touch up paint today so going out after lunch. I was thinking in doing the exact same method as you have prescribed. Fingers crossed.

Gave the seals a coat last night with some silicone lube. Shall go out and give them another coat tonight. Hopefully some lube is all that is needed.

Dyno has been postponed till thursday.

Things are looking up

Dont let the paint dry then use clearcoat on top, because you wont be able to blend in the paint because of the clearcoat on top.

To ensure a flawless finish, mix the clearcoat with the touch up paint so that you can then machine polish and blend.

Good advice from Kev there.

You'll be pushed to get a good finish if the paint drys ahead of putting the clear coat on.
