mk3 golf 1.4 se engine conversion
« on: 01 August 2010, 12:54 »
hey people , i have a 1.4 vw golf se which i have done up to look like a gti and am very proud of as it is immaculate, only thing is the lack of power. Im thinking of getting an engine conversion from a gti 8v and wandering what all the items i need to do this are. I have been told that if i keep the 1.4 gearbox on it it will be absolutely rapid but just have a lower top end speed which i dont care about , and just wanted to make sure that it will fit on my gearbox without any problems too. cheers

The 1.4 Gearbox doesnt always fit the 2L engines, iirc its more like a polo box, or at least its not a 020 box,  im sure it will fit but clutch/fly wheel might be diffrent.

You will need:

GTI engine
Gearbox (maybe)
Exhaust system (including cat)
Radiator + Fan assembly
ECU and Engine loom
Dash loom -Optional depending on what you are adding (e.g elec windows) usually easier to use the GTI loom
Fuel pump?  cant remember what pressure the 1.4 is but iirc you DONT need to change it

Of course when you think about the other things that you should change, it makes sence to use a doner car, like rear suspenssion beam, rear brakes, front suspension, front brakes, anti roll bar (if you dont already have one)  etc..   If you have a doner car you can just pysically change everything that is diffrent, that method worked for me

Oh and as for the gearbox, i would use a GTI box,  the 1.4 boxes are weak, the GTI box struggles to cope as it is so i dread to think what the 1.4 would be like

1.4 & 1.6 use the 084/5 type box (dependant on speed) and you'll need box, drive shafts, hubs etc etc from an 020 type (1.8 or 2.0 8v) as already said the 085 struggles with 60bhp!!

Even more pointless conversion, than a GTI > VR6.

Don't waste your time, and just get a GTI, if you want it so much.

Yeah, he's already said he's got his car looking how he wants to - what's the point in starting from scratch again or does't have the money to buy a gti outright, but can pick up bits as he goes along

Transfer all the bits and pieces from it to the GTI? You can move everything, except the alloys, but that shouldn't be a problem - there's a massive choice of nice 5 stud VAG alloys.

well its not pointless because the car is how i want it and is kinda sentimental too me so i wanna keep it just gain more power. and so by the looks of it the 1.4 gear box will be going then haha, just need to find a donor car now with good mileage for cheap!!

If his shell is solid and in as good a condition as he says, then there is a point. I'd rather a solid shell and do a conversion than a poor GTI and spend months battling rust and falling off bits. People on this forum need to quit shooting down people so much   People also need to search on the topic of conversions though. That or we move the topic from the maintenance section to the main section and put it in BIG BOLD LETTERS SO THESE THREADS STOP.
