Did lots more work on this last night - the stays for the hoop are now tacked on.

It's so useful being able to just jack up the body to weld on the chassis.

re the middle stays being shy

couldn't you have just hacked off the equivalent amount from the front and back stays.. it looks as though you had enough room above to lower it a tad?

No - when it's on the mounts there isn't sufficient room to resolve this issue in that way.

The way it's been resolved, as per the MSA regulations is to use cut off box section to make up the space.  You are not allowed to use stacked plate, which is an interesting facet of the rules - probably because if corrosion gets in there it would pry the stacked plates apart.  This is what we've done to sort this issue.

Next stage is to notch a diagonal in the rear hoop, install that and then weld in harness bars across that as well.

Once that's done we have the fuel tank to reinstall (although I have a lead on a small alloy one).  I'm going to move the battery to the back, to improve weight distribution and then we have an SU carb to install on the engine to replace the Weber.  Unfortunately, although Webers are bang on for putting in Golfs, which remain flat to the road, generally in an SJ they stall at aggressive angles, which is no good when trialing.

More progress today:

Here's the cage installed, so far:

Here's the front mount, which still needs more gussetting to finish:

The bit you can't see it the tube coming down through the body, to this mount.

Here's the rear stay mounting:

You can see the bottom line of weld, which is the reinforcing plate, then the next line is the weld that fastens down the stay.

This is the mid-stay, both of these were shorter than the front and rear ones, as I think I already mentioned.  This is why it's not pretty, but it's to-spec and should be fine in the event of a roll:

I got to the point of notching the tube for the diagonal and bottled it - the notcher's new to me, so I'll do this with the guy who owns it on Thursday night - I don't want to waste a whole length of tube because I screw up the cutting of the diagonal AND I need to make sure I weld it in the right place to be compliant.  After that there's the harness bars to weld in.

The lead on the alloy tank seems to be good, so I should have that on Thursday evening as well.

Looking reasonably good to have it ready to compete next Sunday now.

Oh, in bottling on the diagonal I swapped over to getting the passenger seat mounting sorted - that's nearly done.  It's important to have a victim.

It's only mickey mouse motor sport, as eny fule kno.

Thus it's cheap as chips.  The problem these days is finding a good SJ.

Do that and you're away.  £15-20 per event

Knock yourself out/roll your vehicle over.

Thats a cheaper price than a GTI show ticket, and you get to participate!
I was offered a Landie defender, but he was asking too much money with no MOT or TAX and rot to boot, but I could find one easily around here as its Green belt land.
Might have to start learning how to weld DH?

Indeed - motor sport on tea and a bun money.

This is what I like about 4x4 trials - lots of fun for close to f*ck all.

Well, my welds aren't pretty but they have good penetration and generally seem to hang together OK.

Done some gusseting on the mounts of the SJ's rollcage:

And I grabbed some pictures of the rear hoop:

Got the top to do and the other side as well.  Still hunting for a fuel cell to replace the original, as that hangs down a bit far at the back for my liking.
