electronic wing mirrors - why don't I have them?
« on: 29 July 2010, 22:32 »
Every day I find myself religiously pushing my wing mirrors in so that clumsy pedestrians/motorists don't hit them.

but why are they not electronic like on BMWs?

even Fiestas have them these days so why not my GTI?

I dont think they are an extra when I look on VW website

As you bought a showroom model all your spec was already on the car, if you'd ordered through the dealer you would have had to spec the luxury pack which gives you folding door mirrors and puddle lights.

Edit beaten to it by gizzy

Yep they are available as part of the lux pack.

However they don't fold as well as the likes of the BMW ones.

It's possible to retro fit the but it's around £700 last time I checked (based on the cost for the Mk5 folding mirrors).

£700 is a lot of money to have them electronic I think.

Thanks for your advice

VW website has luxury pack at £125

However I am guessing that retrofitting will not be the same price?

Funny you should ask this.
I was speaking to SteveP the other day and it seems that if there is any damage to the folding mechanism, the whole internal has to be replaced at a cost of £250. Ouch!
So it might cost you £500+ in total plus the fitting etc.

^^^ plus when your retrofitting you need new door controllers hence the cost.

The VW pricing structure for factory fit options will never make sense to me as it's not related the just the parts price difference.

I have them...at first I found it exagerated...but now I find myself using them every day...

Plus sides they can be heated and they are giving light underneath and adjust downwards in reverse to see the curb (your inspection on the Monzas )....big minus a stupid flimsy turn-button to control all these features...

They heat up irrespective of the luxury pack but you are right it is a flimsy knob.
