Clutch cable???
« on: 29 July 2010, 17:55 »
Hi all, new member to the forum but a regular viewer.

I've owned a mk3 Gti 8v 1996 (p) for 2 years.

Yesterday my clutch pedal dropped to the floor and stayed there; i had to put it in first and then start the engine and a manged to get home.

The problem is the clutch cable is in one piece (it is self adjusting) so after i removed it i refiitted it (after playing around i could adjust it). It appeared to be tight but the clutch pedal stayed down again when pressed. Is the cable damaged...as it appears to be too long? (if that maked sense).

Also, when i took the cable from the pedal end, there was a metal tube around the clutch cable (about 1 inch long) which appears to be a mount for the cable which has snapped off somewhere as there is welding at the end of it; could this be the reason for the cable failing and appearing too long?

Many thanks

Could well be the release arm inside the gearbox had broken.

Thanks...i did think that after searching the forum but the i cannot pull the lever arm upby hand.

I am now 90% sure that the cylinder/tube which has snapped off is preventing the cable from pulling the arm up as there is not enough tension.

From what i can see, the tube/cylinder appears to have come off a metal plate attched above the pedals. How can i repair this? Will a new one bolt on or will i have to get new pedals?
