Mk3 GTI 8v
« on: 28 July 2010, 12:57 »
I bought one for my missis, but noticed (amoung other things!!) that the rear gear box mount has loads of movement.  Im talking lean on the front left of the engine and push and the rear right lifts (alot!!)
Is this simply the mount or should there be a bolt that goes right through to the underneath of the car (as the bolt is on top, but nothing comes through underneath.

I also had great fun last night getting the thermostat out!! what a job that is!!  (alternator out, steering pump out!) so got all that to put together tonight!!)
Unfotunately in the process she may have cooked the engine!  I will keep you posted.  but advice on the mount would be cool

Or is there a thread someone can point me in the direction of.

The mount bolts from the top only and is secured to the sub-frame by two M8s IIRC.

They do break down, so the top plate will pull right out, but aren't dear to replace.

Given the car, your best option is probably to scrap it, mind.....
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

I will replace the thermostat first and see if the engine is ok.

The mount should'nt be difficult I dont think, and the head gasket has got to be easier than the thermostat!! lol

Apart from that its a tidy little car, I wouldnt want to scrap it, as we have only just got it (and funds are tight so no new car on the horizon).

Thanks for the advice though (I think!!) lol

I had it running last night and the good news is that the Head gasket seems ok.  The bad news is getting the gaskets to seal properly so I can get the air out of the system.
Oh yeah, then there is the power steering pump that I havent been able to fit back in!!  I read the thermostat thread after I had completely taken it off!!  One of the first bits in the thread is dont take it off!! lol
