Engine trouble, tech help needed.

Hey guys, this is my first post on here.

I've got a mk3 gti 8v with the AGG engine in it. What happened was... traveling home last friday from a long week college, on the M4 the engine just cut out, simple as that! The fuel pump is priming, the cam belt is fine and the engine turns over okay but its just not firing. I have replaced the engine management relay no.30 and fuse 15 on the fuse line. The rotor arm in the distributor looks alright as well as the contacts. Im a little lost as to what it could possibly be, im only 18 so still learning. With this being the "GTI" forum i know you guys will be tricked up on these cars.

coil pack? certainly sounds like something to do with the secondary ignition circuit. is the battery ok?

sorry didnt see the bit about it turning over, wont be the battery or alternator then

did it start again?

no mate, the battery was flat after the 2 hours sat at the side of the motorway with the hazards on, and then the 3 hour tow home... but i charger her right up and there is still no change. The engine just cut out, literally! Thats why im thinking more electrical, there was no warning of the engine going die, no smoke, no rattles and no juddering. Can you expand more on the coil pack for me please bud, location and possible faults?? Cheers.

Is there a spark from any of the HT leads?

I tried checking that but couldnt run round to the front of the car fast enough  , i will check it on the morning before work and let y'all know.

Remove the fuel pump fuse. Remove HT number 1, place it against the engine block, turn the engine over.
It will work even better when it's dark

what there sayin is pull off the HT that goes from the dizzy to the plugs at the spark plug end one at time (replacing them after each go) and hold it to the engine block so that you can see if theres a spark jumping across the gap between block and plug lead. just remember to remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box to disable it. get some one to turn the engine over as you do it. i wouldnt fancy being the one to hold it though lol. if there's no spark then its probably gonna be your coil pack, maybe king lead, or rotor arm as its not likely for every ht lead to fail at the same time. if there is a spark then start thinking about your fuel supply again.

im just going on what i've been told at college though. we normally just crack out the Pico scope for stuff like this!!

was there no other symptoms before it cut out? normally with a defective coil pack it'll run like a bag of spanners!
