« on: 27 July 2010, 17:50 »
Hi guys

missus asked me when our car had to have a mot,  so today i looked to make sure when it was i had brought the car off ebay and did not really check the mot paper work just gave the car a once over
Looking at the MOT paper work noticed an advisory but no paper work so checked online thanks to the help from stickies on these forums

and oil leak ala ( http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=158957.msg1465184#msg1465184 ) :(
and sills corroded :(

just had a look at the car 1 side seems fine but this is what i found on the other

is that bad? 1 section down by the driver door is flat i have no idea tbh

I think it will be a fail to be honest mate, it isnt too expensive to have fixed though, maybe £150 a side?!
At least youve just put my mind at rest about the seriousness of mine

looks a bit like mine :P I got an advisory for mine last year saying corroded but in an unspecified area for a fail, so you might get lucky. would be a good idea to get it done anyway though :P

How long does it take?

will they place repair or replace the sills?
thinking you can pick up the sills for next to nothing sure ive got a mate who can weld? then just get them sprayed

if for £150 ish its replacement sills + paint then thats a fair price

Not sure but I'd guess they would get a pattern part outter sill remove the old one and weld on the new one, or maybe if its not so bad cut away the rust and weld a plate on then cover it in underseal. Depends how far back the rust goes
Whatever they do a large majority of the costs will be labour

not bad at all, and wont be a fail either as no holes in it as far as I can see.
run a grinder up n down the sill to remove all the loose rust, stonechip paint and underseal, then give it a coat of deox gel to kill the rust. cover with clingfilm if possible to keep it moist, or just re-apply every now & again. that should kill all the remaining rust. give it a coat of good zinc primer, then a coat of a good chassis paint such as por15. then some underseal to finish the job and if you want some body colour on the ouside of the sill to neaten it up

think its best to take down a garage and ask if it will fail gives me a few months to get it done.

gonna take it to a body shop 2 but dont wanna be stung extra for something that is not bad
