Serial doesn't need a driver.

USB > serial adaptor will need a driver.

ok ben, but why wont the controller respond back when i run it for a scan??? i downloaded the software from ross tech (vcds release 10.6 & vcds lite) http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/ but it will not respond when scanned for codes! just keeps saying add int and try 1 to try 4 at top left of the screen, then kicks back out to the menu.

Do i have to configure the com port? well i did, i booted into the bios of my dell laptop, changed serial port from com port 1 to com port 3, then options in vag com (vcds) and changed to com port 3 but when i test it, it says

status: ok
interface: no???
type:
version:
status:

its a box that comes up in vcds when the test is run to configure the ports. its a cheap cable from ebay > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SERIAL-OBD-2-VW-Audi-Car-Diagnostic-vag-Code-Reader-/260458978422?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3ca4909c76 , its same as this btw. Is there ment to be a modual on the cable? or is the modual that plugs into the car??

i even changed the serial comm port in bios and it did not conflict with any other port and same again in vcds option but still not responding. my OBD does work as i had my ABS sensor replaced and my mate plugged in a launch pad (worth 3k) and that worked fine.

:embarassed: sorry its 1st time im doing this
