MK2 MR2 N/A wanting MK3 GTi
« on: 07 January 2005, 13:15 »
Hi, this is my first post so please be kind?

I currently have a 1992 Rev 2 MR2 GT-T-bar N/A which is a awesome car but is just not practical for me anymore, as it has no back seats and low mpg (about 25-30).
I want to get a car that combines being practical, decent mpg but still also sporty, so thought MK3 GTi 8v would be ideal choice unless I see a decent looking TDi.

I hear the 8v GTi gets around 34 mpg so is not a vast improvement but will do? " Waits for joke's about 8v from 16v owners"
I'm looking to spend around ?2000 as the rest of the money I get from selling my MR2 will be used to pay off some outstanding debt, my MR2 is up for sale soon, if anyone would like to see it it is on my basic site I put together for it www.projectmr2.tk?

I have seen a few and I know it has to be 3Dr and black, silver or blue (fav is black though) what can I expect for ?2000? I quite like this one in autotrader

As a 16valve owner i cant comment on the ecomony side of the 8v but i would expect you caould easily get 34mpg from a 8v in every day driving, providing you are not to heavy footed.

As for your price range I would also expect you will find a good clean mk3 for that kind of price, also take a look on ebay and see if there any for sale local to you, will also give you a guide to prices etc.

Price will also depend on if you want a standard of modified car.

Hope this is of some help

Paul

Hi Paul,
The points of my license don't allow me to be heavy footed, suppose its a good thing in a way :undecided:
So it won't be thrashed about everywhere so will still be good on fuel economy.
I will keep an eye out on the for sale section of the site.
I want a unmodified one really but not to be bothered about aftermarket wheels or sound system and under 100k.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Craig

having over 100k on a gti is not a problem, a well looked after gti engine will easily see out 250k, my 16 valver has 101k on it when i bought her last year and now has 116k on the clock and still runs like a brand new engine.

So do not be put off by a high mileage golf, as long as it has been looked after and serviced well, you will have no problems.

And good luck with the golf hunting :)

You have made the right choice!

Will look out for one with FSH that has been regularly serviced and had the cambelt done.
Cheers again,

After spending few days thinking about it, I'm now considering 16v if I
see a decent one that matches everything I want (see post in wanted section)
Every insurance quote I have had for 16v is eactly the same as 8v!!
Plus its only bad on fuel if you have a lead foot and I mostly do motorway miles
so should be in high 30's on motorway cruising at 70

an 8v or 16v will be sooooo boring compared to your mr2  :undecided: you need a vr6  (in a corrado shell )

hi
just thought i'd put my ten pence worth in
i've had a 16v mk2 and now have an 8v mk3 and can honestly say the mk2 was more fun and bloody fast , my mk3 is a beaut and it took me a while to find her with a genuine 92k on the clock but no where near as fast as my 16v mk2 but i can get 34mpg out of her on the daily 22mile run to work down the a1m so yeah generally a good all rounder but if i could and i probably will get another 16v as i loved the power band at 4k and actually miss it but hey shiite happens.
you decide!. whatever you get you'll love i promise
