MK3 GTI STALLING ADVICE PLEASE?
« on: 07 January 2005, 10:30 »
Hello.

Can anyone help me im new member so any advice please. I have a mk3 8v gti p reg 54k full service when i bought this car it was fine it needed a full service so did that the car was running better. Then the car started to stall so went to vw garage and they suggested changing throttle body they cleaned it first but car was still stalling so i replaced throttle body with new one. Then i replaced back flow pipe and breather pipes it was fine then again stalling again mainly changing gear from 4th to 3rd coming down the gears. Yet again still stalling so i went to a local rolling road garage which he pluged car into computer and the car stalled 6 times when tested so the guy took engine management out and and found a loose piece off solder on the board so he fixed it the car was running a dream. My car runs at 128 bhp thats what the print out said so im not sure if it has been chipped as normal running for 8v is 115bhp i beleave. Its still stalling any help please. ?THANKS ? ? ?

I dont really know wot could fix the cutting out, but it seems a common problem. I think some people fixed it by changing some relays, im not sure which ones - ill try and find out, they're posted on here somewhere.
In regards to the chipping tho - i took my car (2.0l 8v '96) to amd bicester to get it remapped and the power on the dyno run before the remap came to 128.9hp! The only mods i had was an exhaust and k&n and i know that my car had'nt been already chipped, so i reckon the mods must make a big difference or its been run-in good.

Hello Taff

Thanks for replying theres some nice people out there well as i said my car ran at 128 bhp thats without an induction kit and a standard exhaust. I have fitted a indution kit now its faster.I have had my car on my local rolling road twice trying to sort stalling prob i might crash it in the wall next 2 c if there air bag works its so fucxing annoying when it stalls.I have booked into a specialist and he reckons he can sort it well time will see.
THANKS.

Sorry to hear that you're having stalling problems. Had the exact symptoms with mine for the last 4/5 months. Took it to my local garage, first time they couldn't reproduce it and found no fault codes (TYPICAL). When I found out they had tested it when warm (does it less) I asked them to do it from cold. Still no codes so the guy spoke to his mate who's a VW nut (sounds a great bloke ). He suggested he clean the throttle body and reset the settings, which I think translates to pull the main fuse on the ECU so it re-learns. With that mine has gone back to running like new.

I know you'd tried the throttle body root, worth reseting the ecu just to check.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck with it, 'cos I know it's a b*stard when it does this.

cheers,

Darren.

my car used to stall and not start up right away, I took it to a garage and they kept fitting new parts and billing me it came to ?1000 in total b4 I got problem right even the garage in question ended up taking it to guilders (VW dealer) and it turned out to be a relay switch, when it got hot it cut out the engine at what ever speed i was doing!! I still might have the receipt somewhere with details on it? But it has started to do the  again but this time it starts back up right away and it only cuts out when I dip the clutch I have replaced 2 worn and damaged breather hoses on top of the block which I thought would solve the problem but it hasn't so its back to the drawing boards!!!
cheers

My car stalls at random points, but luckily only when i pull into my driveway when i want the car to stop anyway!! (just sort of rolls into place)  Seems to only do it at low revs when i dip the clutch.  Does it in reverse some times aswell.

Your lucky though mate- my GTi 8v has a tendancy for the power steering to suddenly cut out when i brake into corners!  I find myself battling with rock hard steering and actually went into some bushes recently as a result- luckily no damage due to slow speeds.. (THANK f**k!!)

Reckon my steering pump needs sorting....

Anyone know roughly how much to get engine re-mapped on a rolling road????

Wow, this looks like a common problem, seems almost exactly like the same dilemma i'm going through, except the difference is i've got a Mk4 1.6 S.? What happens is i start the car in the morning (when the engines cold), it would start up normally but if i press on the gas pedal and depress, the car would stall.? Also it would stall when i dip the clutch to change gear, which makes it dangerous to go round corners as the car would stall and i would have near enough no control over the solid steering.? But the stalling goes away after the engine is warmed up after about 5 mins driving (without stopping, cos it'll stall).? Took it to AA to have it plugged up and checked, but the computer returned no problems, so they told me to take it to VW to have it properly checked out, but i'm dreading the extortionate prices they'll charge.? Anyone know what exactly is this problem and how much would it cost to get it fixed?

Does the Golf have a clutch switch? If so, check that.
